A PASSENGER plane has been forced to make an emergency landing in Bangladesh after an attempted hijacking.The Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight touched down at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong after the suspect allegedly tried to storm the cockpit. The flight was scheduled to go from Dhaka to Dubai via Chittagong. All passengers have left the plane, according to the airline's general manager, Shakil Miraj.

He said: ”There were 142 passengers and all of them have come out from the aircraft safely.”

Bangladeshi MP Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal, who was on flight BG147, said the gunman opened fire on board the plane and demanded to speak to the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Mr Badal told Somoy TV: “The pilot told that this man, a Bangladeshi, fired a shot. However, everyone is safe.

“When the pilot pursued him, the hijacker said that he wanted to talk to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Now the law enforcement agencies are trying to take him into custody."

Another passenger added that the hijacker claimed to have a bomb.

Police and the army surrounded the plane after in touched down and are talking to the suspect.

Flights from the airport have been suspended while they deal with the incident.

The flight had been due to briefly stop at Chittagong, a half-hour flight from Dhaka before continuing to Dubai.

But the hijacker attempted to take control of the plane shortly after take-off.

BdSTAll the passengers and crew members disembarked safely from Dubai-bound flight BG147 from Dhaka after the suspect pulled a gun at the pilot’s head on Sunday afternoon.

Tension rose when security forces surrounded the plane at the airport in a stop-over at 5:41pm and the authorities there halted all flight operations.

Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Mafidur Rahman, who took part in the rescue operations, told reporters about the arrest of the suspect at the airport around 7:45pm.

The suspect had wanted to talk to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Bangladesh Air Force official said.

The suspect had an issue with his wife and wanted to talk about it with Hasina, he told the pilot, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh Chairman M Naim Hassan

Briefing the media, the CAAB chief said the authorities maintained communication with the pilot.

All on board the plane but a crew member named ‘Sagor’ disembarked safely first and Sagor also got off the plane later, Naim said.

A team led by Air Vice Marshal Mafidur from the air force base in Chattogram conducted the operation from 7:17pm to 7:25pm at the CAAB’s request, Naim said.

Hasina was informed and the “combing operation” was conducted on her orders, the CAAB chief said.

The suspect, who wore a wired clothe and seemed “a bit mentally imbalanced, was pulled out in an injured state, Naim said.

He also said the suspect was speaking Bangla and appeared to be a Bangladeshi.

The airport was opened at 8pm, Naim said.

Investigation will be conducted to find out how the suspect broke the security barriers to get on the plane, he added.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A flight bound for Dubai from Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, made an emergency landing Sunday in Chittagong, Bangladesh, after a man attempted to hijack the plane, officials said.

The suspect, a Bangladeshi, asked to speak to the country’s prime minister before dying from injuries in an exchange of gunfire with military commandos, officials said.

The flight, operated by state-run Biman Bangladesh Airlines, took off from Dhaka at 4:35 p.m. for the trip to Dubai via Chittagong.

The pilot made the emergency landing in Chittagong about 40 minutes later, after a crew member reported “suspicious behavior” by the man, said Rezaul Karim, an official with the Bangladeshi military’s inter-service public affairs office.

All 143 passengers and seven crew members aboard the Boeing 737-800 were safely evacuated, Air Vice Marshal Mofidur Rahman said at a news conference broadcast live on Somoy TV.

The commandos fired at the suspect after he shot at them when they asked him to surrender, army Maj. Gen. Motiur Rahman told reporters, according to ATN TV news. He said that the suspect was carrying a pistol, but did not say where the shooting took place.

The army official said the suspect, whose name has not been released, asked to speak to his wife and to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The suspect died before reaching the hospital, he said.

The suspect appeared to be “mentally imbalanced,” said Air Vice Marshal M. Naim Hassan, chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority. “I am saying this because of his behavior. He wanted to talk to the prime minister.”

Before the suspect was pronounced dead, Rahman, had described him as a “terrorist” and said that he had been arrested and was being questioned.

Bangladeshi soldiers could be seen during the live TV broadcast taking positions inside Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong, 252 kilometers (156 miles) southeast of Dhaka.
