Thanks very much '81, some very nostalgic memories stirred up !

(I couldn't see the point of the "language" warning until I watched the London Bus - designed to be shown around the Empire - where the commentary describes how in England, "cripples can always expect help while boarding the bus.........)

An amazing website. A very professional use of the media in recording the history of an air base. The old pics and videos are brilliant. What a time capsule for former squadron members and their families. Truly a labour of love!!:ok: :ok:

Hi Gents!
Came across these high quality clips and just had to drop in and share. (Good to see the "What cockpit thread is powering along nicely!)

The clips are in High definition, so if it plays choppy hit the "HD is on" button and that will turn HD off and make it run better.

First up is the Vickers Vimy replicas first flight since 2005.

And here is the last major aircraft movement at Brooklands - The Vickers Vanguard.

Many thanks for that.

Ahhh... the Guardsvan... flight deck so big you could play tennis in it. I flew to Malta in one, around 1967. When we reached TOC the captain appeared.. looked along the cabin and saw a young boy of about 10 or 11 who was travelling alone and beckoned him. Some while later I was invited to the flight deck (having previously made arrangements) and when I entered I was amazed to see the youngster in the captain's seat! The look on his face will be something I'll remember for always.

I checked some of the other videos, particularly Andy's 60th birthday. I thought it was a rush for Hammer Films but, no, just my old mate Mike Crutch getting his ugly face in the shot!!!

I still reckon you should have dropped flour bags - at least - on the Mercedes hut !

I'm sure the famous German sense of humour would appreciate it, after all they're operating on a British WW2 Fighter & Bomber base...

My boat has a chemical loo which is available 'at your disposal' - may need some separation trials - ( I can think of a target or two close by worth risking, NOT on the 'field ) though I have to agree with Jeremy Clarkson, the Merc/Mclaren makes a wonderful sound and did remind me of a Merlin, albeit at higher rev's.

Regards to all at Brooklands.

Priceless video ! It makes my recollections of reading his book "We" much more vivid. Thankyou very much for the link.

Fantome
17th Feb 2010, 23:29
'WE' was largely ghosted, a hurried effort straight after the 1927 flight on the part of his publicists, with whom he severed all ties, to cash in with the huge sales that this book, hurriedly churned out on newsprint paper, enjoyed.

CAL in fact wrote that he found 'WE' an embarrassment and when the Pulitzer Prize winning 'SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS' appeared in 1953 only then did he tell his story in the simple, graphic, thoughtful prose at which he excelled. 'AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF VALUES' fits into the same camp.

I have a friend whose late father flew Washingtons in the bomber role then on 192 Sqn from Watton. He is one of 3 pilots on 192 in its Washington phase mentioned in "Listening In". From linking his RAF record with information in the book it looks like his AFC was awarded for sorties to do with ELINT connected to Suez

Locally Argosies could only go into Riyan.
Not to decry the RAF, but Aden Airways DC3s could show them a thing or two.
I was a commercial civilian there 64-67 and travelled widely. I've got 35 ninutes of silent film now on dvd with several aerial shots from DC3s. Must learn how to put it on Youtube.
The shots of Thumeir brought a wry smile to me - I used to drive by the wire in an Arab Land Rover on the way up to Dhala.

Excellent find, nvubu. I'm watching it now.

At about 11:00, I noticed that as the Sunderland skipper increased power, the mixture controls moved automatically.

The Wikipedia page is worth reading:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coastal_Command_(film)

The participants in the film were active RAF officers, NCOs and aircrew, and RN officers. The film featured pilot Roger Hunter and Flight Sergeant Charles Norman Lewis. On 25 August 1942, Lewis was killed on a flight that Prince George, Duke of Kent was undertaking as a morale-boosting mission to Iceland.

nvubu,

Very interesting video with what must be the world's worst commentary! It took me back to my youth, watching the Superfreighters of Silver City Airways at Lydd. I was also reminded of the last time I saw a Bristol Freighter in the air. One appeared head-on to me, on a day when even Special VFR would have been a joke, on a LH (wrong side) downwind for 34 at Calgary. I presume it was a HawkAir aircraft. At the time, I didn't know there were any in Canada.

Back to the commentary, I couldn't imagine how the narrator could read it, without laughing. Then when the credits rolled, I discovered he wrote it! :E

I've just stumbled on this very interesting video about the CF-104:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxDVehIAK6Y

There are a lot of excellent shots of its predecessors. I've never seen so many Clunks!

I was a bit disappointed about the politically correct use of SI for the performance figures!

The last time I saw a 104 flying, in the mid-70s, we were "almost formating". The 104 was doing circuits at Cold Lake, approaching at ~170 kts. I was being checked out in a Motorfalke, approaching the parallel taxiway at 50 kts!

Interesting... this Thunderbirds film just popped up, was rather taken by the Tiger Moth sequence starting at around 13 minutes - combination of model and real life use of G-ANFM, a picture of which appeared in Alan Bramson's Tiger Moth Story "painted in a garish scheme for a film" or some such caption! Now I know!

https://youtu.be/q7krq0s3fwo?si=xau1fl9aWts_OeCv&t=775

Blimey - Tiger was flown by Joan Hughes and wound up with an unsuccessful prosecution:
The fictional M104 motorway was represented by the then-unfinished M40.The Tiger Moth's near-miss with the bridge was filmed between Junctions 4 and 5 at Lane End on the High Wycombe Bypass. Before this sequence was filmed, the Ministry of Transport and local police had told the crew that for the stunt to be performed legally the plane's wheels had to remain in contact with the ground while it passed under the bridge. During one of the takes, a crosswind sprang up and the drag from the dummies caused Hughes to fear that she would lose control if the plane connected with the motorway. She therefore stayed airborne, clearing the bridge by nine feet (2.7 m) as originally intended. During another take, the continuing crosswind necessitated another glide, angering the Ministry of Transport official who was supervising the shoot and leading to the arrests of Hughes and Foster.

Hughes was charged with seven counts of dangerous flying and Foster with three of aiding and abetting. However, their trial at Aylesbury Crown Court did not take place until March 1968, by which time production had ended. After a two-day hearing, during which the jury viewed the finished film, the defendants were found not guilty. Commenting on his acquittal, which was reported in the Daily Express with the headline "Under The Bridge Goes Lady Penelope", Foster said that the incident had "opened the way for much greater realism in filmmaking." Hughes remarked that the stunt marked the first time in her career that she had been afraid.
