View Full Version : Return to instructing? it's been a while......

Hi Team,

I have not instructed since 2003 and have recently left 'full time' aviation to persue other interests. I have all the tickets to teach ME/IR but of course these have lapsed. My total time is 5500 and I have extensive experience in Charter and Airlines. The reason I left my last job was due to fatigue/boredom/lifestyle blah blah blah ...................... however, instructing does still capture my imagination.

Do people return to instructing after big breaks? and more importantly, are training providers interested in 'my type'? ( I am 61) .

Any thoughts or opinions gratefully received.

ME/IR instructors are currently rarer than rocking horse droppings so if you get revalidated you should have no trouble finding work.

Whopity beat me to it. The answer is yes and yes! If you're interested in varied club instructing rather than "working" at a commercial training school (we don't do ME or IR) is Elstree anywhere near you?

Yes, instructors do return after a long break, I did, and yes there is a shortage of instructors right now. It's very rewarding after retirement from a flying career, and gets you out of the house and far from the daily nagging of 'er indoors!

I'm pretty sure that those L3 adverts had an original closing date of end of November. Interesting that it is now end of January...... Mustn't have had many suitable applicants.

Rather ominous paragraph:

Finally, all FI's will be required to support the CFI in the conduct of Academy business at Gloucester and any other Academy satellite site and to conduct any other reasonable duties which may, from time to time, be given by the Head of Training (HT) or CFI.

See how much mileage there is in this school. The COO is the same person who was previously in charge of Airways Aviation and the reputation whilst under his tenure wasn't that good. From what I've heard I wouldn't wish to work for him.
Opening up a new (ish) (Previously Bliss Aviation) school in a cut throat business.

Shall watch with interest.

As for the revalidation, I would recommend Central Flight Training at Tatenhill.

He has lapsed, so it's a renewal not a revalidation.

Experienced pilots have a lot of wisdom they can pass on to students to make aviation safer, plus it is rewarding watching your students progress.
Good luck.
