Anyone know of any airstrips close Melton Mowbray? So far I can't find anything closer than Saltby. Date of flight is Wednesday August 14th

Needs to be minimum 400m, and its for a C150. Have full insurance.

Saltby actually looks fairly close to Melton Mobray although a glance at the 1/2 mil map also reveals that RAF Cottesmore (good if you've a military insurance waiver), also Leicester is not much further. My farm strip guide shows nothing else,

Now I may be confused (only had one coffee so far this morning) But a remember flying in to farm strip about 3 years ago now, called Melton Mobery (however it's spelt).

I think it was a grass strip about 500 mtrs. Had no problems one up in my Arrow 2 at the time. Now sure how close to town it was though. I was visiting a farmer freind, no longer with us.

Unfortunately, Melton Mowbray airfield itself is closed. Sad loss to mankind.

There are a few that might be of interest:

Leicester (maybe a bit far away)

Langham (Private - need PPR etc)

Saltby (but that's really gliders only)

Cottesmore (OK with PPR)

Exton (Private again)

I don't know if the private ones are still open - nothing promulgates closure of a private airfield.

Saltby will accept powered aircraft but insist on telephone PPR, they were very friendly when I flew in. You also get a really scary view of Waltham on the Wolds TV mast, 1487' amsl when lined up on 25. It looks as if it must be on the upwind end of the runway but is actually about 2.5nm away! Also the Saltby runway is in surprisingly good nick considering it's of WW2 vintage.Langar is about equidistant from Melton and they'll accept visitors as well but again, you must ring for PPR and a briefing on the days parachuting activity. If there is a competion, (at Saltby), or a big parachuting day, (at Langar), they may well refuse you. I was under the impression that Exton had been returned to agriculture. Leicester is a bit of a way to travel. To the East there's Castle Bytham but I think it's getting a bit of a way away to be really practical.

A bit late for your August trip, but RAF Cottesmore do accept civil movements with 24 hour PPR and you need to fax the releavant Insurance paperwork through beforehand (as Fujiflayer says).

IIRC it is also the RAF policy at the moment to welcome civil moves with open arms as a form of revenue and for good PR.

You will find the mil alot cheaper than most aerodromes and my friend that used Cottesmore was extremely happy with the service.

Melton is about a 15 - 20 min drive from Cottesmore so it may be an option for future reference.
