hello all. Now that I’ve properly fallen in love with flying, I need something to feed my habit when I’m grounded....which happens to be most of the time ;-). I am interested in any well made British podcasts that deal with being a student pilot. There used to be an excellent gliding podcast by a chap called Sam Deeks but that ended a few years back. I’m not so interested in techy stuff, more the process of learning and the beauty of flight. It can be gliding, micro lighting or GA....I just need a daily fix 😊 also if you know if any good documentaries or series that would help too. I can’t believe I’m even learning to fly. It’s been a total shock that I should fall in love with something that used to scare the hell out of me.

Thanks
Steve

One of the best aviation podcast/videos that is both fun and inspiring is the lecture given by Brian Schul. You may be familiar with the LA Speed story but I highly recommend the full version from which that story comes from. It is inspirational.

I was in the same boat needing my aviation fix in the car etc and have found quite a few - not necessarily focused on learning to fly but addictive none the less and informative! My top picks are:
Airline Pilot Guy - American based but thoroughly entertaining with a great community of APG’ers!
Plane Talking UK - general chat and news about commercial air travel but also includes some aspects of GA.
Aviation News Talk Poscast - Max Treacott is a US based CFI, talks about the news and also covers some learning aspects to flying.
Unfortunately I had a few us based podcasts about learning to fly but none from the UK.
Enjoy

The "Airspace" podcast from the Smithsonian is pretty good.

Like you, Steve, I also listen to a lot of podcasts. My favourites are;
Stuck Mic Avcast
Uncontrolled Airspace
Aviation Newstalk,
although you ask for British ones, these are American, but very good in my opinion.

The best British ones I have found are;
The Inspired Pilot Podcast
Pilot Episodes,
which are not about training, but just a good listen.

The very best one I found by guy called Karl Brown, who logs his journey to learn to fly from start to finish with getting his PPL,
Old Man New Pilot, it's a couple of years ago, now, that he did it, but it is well made and you get to feel his highs and lows during his learning process.

Also, Flight Chops for video . https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPOMdL9KIwcFMG9Bxppk4Mw Very well produced and by a guy whose enthusiasm is a good advertisement of the joy of flying. Recent videos include soloing in a Harvard.

The Royal Aeronautical Society has many excellent podcasts and videos although not too many will be directly training related. I though found that as of March 2018 they were poorly indexed and described which reduced their accessibility to those not "in the know". I apologise unreservedly if that issue has now been resolved, I am not prepared to spend the time today to investigate:-(

Discussed by me here with some helpful follow-ups.

Most have descriptive titles however here a recent one that is difficult to decode - "Amy Johnson Named Lecture 2018". I have no idea if I want to listen to it or not.

Their main search page allows you to search for "Content Type" "Audio" or "Video", leaving other search options blank works.

Video

Audio

These contain good descriptions of the content, so maybe I should eat my words?

Good luck.

Podcast = Audio program

Like a Radio show you can listen to anytime. Usually can be on-line or downloaded.

Many are now on youtube as well with no actual video. This is VERY ANNOYING if there is no other route to get to the material as on mobile devices youtube does not permit background listening and you have to keep the web page open and the device unlocked if you want to listen. Of course this kills the battery.

Or maybe you prefer the term "The Wireless" instead of Radio:-)

Thank you........... How do you locate a particular one? How do you tune into it? Have never come across one.

The answer to that is a bit more complex.

Anything from the BBC you can download from there as MP3 files, then just play on your computer or your phone (he says typing this listening to a BBC podcast on engineering ethics at the moment). I'm pretty certain you can also get them on iPlayer. I've just downloaded one called "Intreague - the Ratline" about hunting Nazi war criminals post WW2: which just indicates that there's lots more than just aviation out there.

There are smartphone apps - I have one on my phone I like called "NPR One" that searches and plays podcasts from various American free resources. The ones on there personally I listen to are Airspace (from the Smithsonian), Cooking with Fire (a cookery programme), Sidedoor (also from the Smithsonian, but not *just* aviation), Nerdette (people in science), Stuff you missed in history class (pretty obvious).

The Royal Aeronautical Society ones are linked from the society's website, then you can just download them and play on your computer, tablet, phone, whatever.

There are broader "podcast apps" you can download onto smartphones that'll then search out, download and play various podcasts from sources all over the world.

It's basically all one giant, global radio 4! The scale of what's out there does make it a bit like trying to sip the Niagara Falls through a straw. The best I can say is to dive in, see what you find.

Hey Steve,

The Pilot to Pilot should definitely be an inspiring, well made and informative podcast for your time between flights, add it to the list with the others mentioned above!

I think Justin Siems offers great insight into the many aspects of the industry and put in awesome work encouraging the Avination. Each guest has a genuine passion for aviation and shares their various experiences on the path to pursuing their dream.

So far my favourite avcast, best of luck with your training!

(first post here so cannot paste in the URL for you unfortunately)

Trust me- if your PC can read and post on PPrune, it'll download podcasts. If it has speakers or a headphone socket, it'll play them.

If in doubt, find a handy 12 year old!
