Of course there were and are way too many conspiracy theories revolving around government action- inaction. But for an in person interview 10 years later, the following on CSPAN by Major Heather Penney is one of the most intimate detailed explanations available- She flew on that day to attempt to protect Wash DC. At that time everyone was geared to protecct from an external ( over ocean) attack.

But keep in mind - all aircraft were grounded within an hour. and for the first time ever ( from another source ) military were given ' weapons free ' authorization over the nations capital a bit later after the initial response. But one could argue even without the traditional ' missiles ' aboard - there was the ' equivalent" authorization to ' stop' a civilian airliner by whatever method available.

And the memorial in Pennsylvania will be crowded tomorrow

I’m sure we’ve all thought about what we’d do from time to time. There’s lots of factors to consider, not least time and location, however I think some visceral self-preservation instinct would kick in alongside training and adrenaline and we’d all do what we could.

The world has changed since then, however recent incidents have shown that there’s still scope for similar events. The best we can do is take our caps off and have a minute to remember those lost, and continue to learn and make aviation safer.

Thanks Conso for the link to M. Penney's interview. She gives a very interesting account of the shock and confusion at the terrible events happening at the time.
Though it never came to pass I am sure she would given her life ramming any plane containing terrorists.
