Hopefully this time it won't be moved to JB.

It's a Northrop F-5F Tiger II

New to the Iranians....old kit to the Western Air Forces.

Should hostilities kick off....they become instant scrap metal.

They roll it out to the press as a “new” fighter about once every 3 years - must stop the tyres getting flat spots.

Those of us who have flown DACT against them will recall that they are by no means easy meat, especially WVR.....

One always plays to the Enemy's weakness.....not to their strength.....right?

Compare the capability of the F-22, F-35, and even the venerable F-15 and F-18 to this Iranian aircraft and consider what an engagement would look like.

The Iranians would never even get WVR if the Tactics are correct.

I saw a clip on BBC showing an F-5 and was confused ... I was expecting their Airfix Stealth jet!

Q: I assume they run out of airframes before run out of Mx?

Well at least the guy in front has the decency to have his head bowed in shame when the picture was taken......

I know it's funny to tout the F5 as a 4th Gen aircraft, it clearly isn't, but I do respect the Iranians talent at keeping their fleet of mid=-70s ac going considering they've had no OEM support since the revolution. As for taking Northrop's venerable little fighter and conducting a major modification to the vertical tail to produce the Saeqeh there must be some talent in country, whether home-grown or imported. Even the F14s remain(ed) viable for a considerable period after the split from the west.

Of course the Iranian thingy could be a scam where they've taken an old F-5F and dolled it up a bit. Not sure the Iranians are up to making J-85's from scratch!

According to the Aviationist - https://theaviationist.com/2018/08/21/iran-unveils-new-domestic-fourth-generation-fighter-jet-but-its-just-an-upgraded-f-5f-tiger/

The F5 was the testbed for the upgraded cockpit and avionics - the actual aircraft wasn't ready to be unveiled.
Makes you wonder why they made the announcement without the actual aircraft there.

...just maybe it doesn't really exist! Disinformation, ruses and other tricks are all used in "warfare"...

The F5 was the testbed for the upgraded cockpit and avionics - the actual aircraft wasn't ready to be unveiled. Which would be logical if they revealed shots of the cockpit avionics and none of the airframe - instead of the other way round.....

Russian engine I presume? What do you guys think? No, not a Russian engine. The engine is an Iranian OWJ (Zenith), which is a reversed engineered copy of the J-85 which powers the F-5 series of fighters. Iran "unveiled" the OWJ engine back in early 2017. And this "domestic" aircraft is itself a modified F-5.

This is the aircraft that they were planning to unveil. The Kowsar.

Essentially based on the Taiwanese AIDC AT-3

The Iranians lost a F5 today, unfortunately the pilot didn't survive.
