I read a comment in Pilot recently that we would see the demise of AvGas in Europe next year. Well we have all seen that type of comment before but does anyone have more authorative information and what may the possibilities be for keeping the fleet of AvGas GA types flying.

Many of the older and newer engines will be able to be converted to run on Mogas. One real problem will be for the operators of Spitfires and the like, for whose engines 100LL was originally developed.

The number converting to MOGAS will be low - and to be honest is not likely to be accepted by the CAA due to the nature of the fuel. (Read the CAA safety sense leaflet).

A non-lead avgas has already been developed AFAIK and is in testing.

Hope this helps,

It is more than 'in testing' it is the only type of avgas that is available in Sweden

On the Continent there are fuels available for aircraft other than 100LL, which many places in Germany now use just for IFR flights. In Czech & Slovakia there's BL (=aviation grade)98, and in Austria and Germany there's Mogas on the airfields which seems to be specially for aircraft!. Either 95 or 98 octane- and its 25% cheaper than 100LL.

VFR flyer's certainly shouldn't miss this overpriced commodity.

Now what makes me think, that whatever replaces 100LL in the UK, once the oil companies & the Chancellor have had their share, will still costs us just as much. :(

100LL is a post war fuel the LL means low lead ! by the end of the war most fighters used 100/130 or 115/145 octane.

A & C,

100LL remains at octane ratings of 100/130.
