View Full Version : Farm Strip near Kirriemuir, Angus

We have just constructed a new farm strip located 2nm SW of Kirriemuir, and 500m north of the former Drumshade Gliding Site which can be found on SkyDemon.
It is located just behind the unfinished house and farm shed. Please note STRIP IS NOT LANDABLE YET. There is an electricity cable to be removed in two weeks time running through it, however all other ground work has been completed and we are now waiting on the grass to grow.

All welcome for a buzz around to have a look before it is operational come summer time. Dimensions are 560 x 24m running 09/27 and is dead flat, so will take most aircraft.
I'll post updates when visitors are welcome to land when safe to do so.

If you are coming for a look in the meantime, please give a call on 135.475 detailing the usual stuff, but do highlight "Westmuir Traffic" as there is a strip just East of Forfar using SafetyCom and also in a 09/27 configuration. We want zero confusion as safety is our number 1 priority and with two strips in close vicinity, talking to each other is essential.

Happy Flying!

I did my best to add the runway to OpenStreetMap. Please take a look here (https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/56.6495/-3.0288)
and let me know what you think?

Great. Hope I can visit later in the summer.

Also look forward to the Bon Scott memorial fly-in??

Excellent stuff!
Funnily enough my first thought was what a great way to get to Bonfest as well.

Jan, you are spot on with the location.

Just delighted to hear of kindred spirits willing to create their own place to commit aviation. Living just a few miles from the south coast of England and with an a/c that cruises at 80kts I doubt I'll be a regular visitor, however I wish you well in your endeavour.

Living a (humid) bit further East, but flying at the same speed, I can only concur!

@T/S: if once you report the strip as accessible to visitors, I'll also give it a mention either as an aerodrome (which shows up) or an airstrip (which doesn't).

Good for you, I hope you've got your ducks in a row and you don't have the problems that PB has with his strip (https://www.pprune.org/private-flying/607677-here-we-friggin-go.html), particularly if all and sundry come calling!

FP.

Yes, I thought the same. Mentioned the Forfar strip as an "airstrip", not an "aerodrome" so as to keep it below the radar.

25nm X 341 deg magnetic from Kingsmuir. I think?
can I do a low pass? (Once I get the permit done)

Yes Jan I plotted it on Runway HD (Google) the Google mapping is slightly different / out of date.

What’s the latest on progress?

Strip is looking beautiful, open and ready for aircraft. I’ve landed a 152, 172, super cub and there’s also been a Maule in as well. It’s beautifully smooth and 560m long

Nice one. Made a practice approach this afternoon on the way back from Forfar but didn't know it was landable so went around. Looks nice though, will land next time if all OK.

Excellent news. Will try to visit on the Montrose fly-in weekend.

Good to hear about your caution, but in this way it made for a sadly missed opportunity. What was wrong with a little phone call before take off - "good afternoon, I'll be flying my xxxx near your field around hh: local, I think to do a circuit at least, could I consider landing?" They call it PPR and some dislike it heavily, but to me it seems a great idea and opening up some opportunities.

Is there a phone number for PPR?

PPR isn’t necessary here, land at your own discretion.
no wind sock up yet, but there are two windmills to the NW that give a good indication. Could also have a listen to Dundee ATIS to get the surface wind there before contacting safeycom on approach into us.

Landed at lovely Westmuir strip today and received very friendly welcome from Richie.

Only thing that confused me slightly was that there was a glider sitting in the very next field!

It turned out that it had landed out during a cross-country task fom Portmoak and was being retrieved by trailer just as I left.

That might have been the young man who completed his Silver Badge flight yesterday. :)

I quite fancy visiting Westmuir tomorrow afternoon/evening (Friday). Is there space to park for a while? I was thinking of getting some food at Armstrongs - https://www.armstrongs-restaurant.com - looks walkable from the strip I think. Thanks.

Aaron Christie is opening his strip at Kirriemuir this Saturday 21st. All pilots welcome.

It is just north of Drumshade on the Meigle to Kirrie road

Glorious day for it but heading south I was astonished by the turbulence over the Grampians and the headwind component. 40+ kts being the worst of it.
Eventually gave up having burnt a quarter of my fuel to cover one third of the journey.
Heading home, 70 kts on the ASI and 114 on the GPS!

Pity that you could not make it. It was great day a Westmuir with about 15kts straight down the strip. 18 other visiting planes by the time I left.

And some lovely sausage rolls and cakes to eat! Thanks to all involved.

Apparently, at least 27 planes flew in on the day!

There was some fairly impressive wave activity in the North East on Saturday; some very long distances were flown by sailplanes to good heights, so I'm not surprised you found some turbulence. The SE wind caused some launch challenges too !
