Was thinking of going for the first time this year. It looks as if all the slots are taken - is this likely with just a few days before start, or possibly a glitch?

You have an ultralight now, don't you? Take that to nearby Markdorf, they offer all you need including a shuttle to the airport.

I saw that RocketRoute is offering cashback ($0.05USD/USG) on ordering fuel at FDH this week via their Marketplace. So might be worth using that platform for ordering your fuel.
