Guten Tag fellow pilots/ppruners!

I'm hoping some of you guys may have some experience of GA around Bavaria and can offer recommendations. There's a chance my airline will be basing me out of EDDM for a couple of years and my kids will soon be at an age that dad wants to introduce them to his passion. I'm looking for any airfields/clubs around southern Bavaria, the smaller and friendlier the better, that hire 4 seat SEPs. Anyone got any suggestions/experiences/recommendations from their travels?

Thanks in advance chaps,

G.

The lack of a proper G/A field near München has often been deplored. If you can deal with short runways you could look into EDMJ Jesenwang but even that is a fair distance from town. Otherwise it will have to be EDML Landshut or even EDMA Augsburg.

[[edit]] Just found on the www : perhaps the aeroclub at the former Erding Air Base would accept you as a member? Brush up your German, though! And I have a feeling there must be limitations, or the club would be crowded. https://www.fliegerclub-erding.de/unser-verein/mitgliedschaft/

Munich area is probably the worst you can go for GA in Europe, its hostility against everybody daring to exercise the art of freedom to fly is legend.

Your wish <small> is easy, most of the few Bavarian airfields are comparably small, like EDMJ Jesenwang (1360ft 'long' and a crossing road with even a traffic sign at one end of the asphalt), but friendly may be a bigger than thought problem to find.

Close around EDDM you will find: ETSE, EDPI, EDNX, EDML, EDMD, EDPN, ETSF, EDMP, ETSI, ENDA, EDMO and microlight fields at Straßham, Wasentegernbach, Antersberg.

In quite some cases usage is restricted to local pilots, or they have odd opening hours (not seldom rendering the field completely useless at all), or they celebrate the obedience game German-PPR.

As a consequence not few Munich GA pilots flee their area and it is not uncommon to use EDMA Augsburg or EDMS Straubing, both are typically well over one hour to drive from Munich.

Sorry, I do not know free charter 4-seat SEP in the area. All I know in the area is clubs renting to members and GiCs (Germans in Clubs) are often a very 'special' experience.

Thanks chaps,

Looks like Erding or Landshut would fit the bill, a bit pricey but no worse than some of the South East UK airfields I've flown from. I'll pay them a visit next time I'm over there and see how 'special' my experience is! I've nearly 3000hrs SEP, let's hope it's a case of join the club, quick check ride and go, no B***S**t :ok:

@CH sounds like having more experience (and also like a regular visitor of ourairports.com :) ) , but I think you need to be aware aeroclubs on the continent tend to really be a club, i.e. a socialising environment. Apart from financial matters, you may well be expected to spend several hours of work on the next club event, either rotating the pig on the spit or cleaning toilets or swapping beer barrels, all of them at a surprisingly fast rate ;)
