View Full Version : STAR and Localiser Speeds

Hi,

I have a question for approach controllers regarding the transition from STAR speeds to published localiser speeds.

Let's take Johannesburg as an example. The STAR includes two speed restrictions - 250 knots at 50 DME and 210 knots at 15 DME. The ILS procedure lists further speed restrictions, starting with 180 knots at 10 DME.

Imagine a scenario where our vectors do not include any speed instructions. At what point do controllers expect us to slow down from 210 knots to meet the 180 knot requirement on the localiser? Slowing down too early will obviously cause the traffic behind us to bunch up. Likewise, slowing down too late will cause us to catch the traffic ahead.

Is there any set standard or can I slow down whenever I want as long as I meet the requirements on the localiser?

Thank you and kind regards,
