CAUGHT ON VIDEO: Jet makes rough landing at RDU during high winds (http://wncn.com/2018/03/02/caught-on-video-jet-makes-rough-landing-at-rdu-during-high-winds/amp/)

Can't tell if they dragged the wing/tail. Pretty challenging weather due to a system moving through the northeast yesterday.

I bet he did get the left wing; giant swap ends at about 15’.

This is when you have to be quick on the thrust levers to save the day.

Nope!FADEC sees that you get equal and even reverse. Nice huh ?

Stopping the video at the right moment shows there is still some clearance at the left wingtip. Nothing to see here, move on...

Thats the oleos cleaned to the stops...not a nice day to be aviating

Difficult to tell from the video, but I think the smoke is tyre smoke being blown across.

Good job. Right on the spot! :ok:

Where's the METAR??

Low level windshear, good enough reason to reduce the flap setting and fly a faster approach.

Good enough not to land, Hort! By all means add a few knots but if you're changing configuration because of known windshear, maybe you shouldn't be there at all.

Good point Bloggsy, to be fair to me though I was commenting on the vid as I saw it happen and made the general point.
There’s a famous vid online of WLG on a typical sporty day where a dash 8 almost bumps it’s bum thanks to the same phenomena..given a bit more energy and inertia you can mitigate the worst affects on a gusty day if you deem it sensible enough to fly the approach :ok:

They felt that one! Looks like a fun day for flying though (and plenty of extra fuel)!

That fence is nicely shielding the trail of sparks :}

CRJ only has one landing flap setting, no option to use a different flap setting by choice.

Looked like a six-pointer to me

How very scientific!

I've downloaded the video and run frame by frame and it's impossible to tell, you do see a flash as the wingtip appears to strike the ground

you do see a flash as the wingtip appears to strike the ground

In which case, presumably, it would not have gone unnoticed by the pilots, passengers and, subsequently the ground crew on the turnround.

Do we have any evidence that the outbound flight from RDU was delayed/cancelled? That should be relatively easy to ascertain.

but if you're changing configuration because of known windshear

Ah come on! You know you get those days when there is known windshear just about everywhere:E Been there and got the t-shirt several times:}
