NPPL to LAPL deadline effective now!

Hi all,

Just to point out, the NPPL to LAPL deadline is for licences ISSUED by April 8th.

So if you are - for instance - using University Air Squadron time to get an NPPL so as you can convert it to a LAPL (and maybe on to an EASA SEP later), then your NPPL has to be issued by April 8th.

It is NOT submitted, it is ISSUED.

So depending on how fast you think the CAA will process........

I believe that the LAA and the CAA are prioritising NPPL applications so that licences an be issued by the 8th April, but the window is closing rapidly. I've one student who is hoping to get his NST and GST done within the next week, but it's getting very tight for issue before the 8th. I've heard of a date of 22nd of March to get applications in.

I've also had folk with Microlight licences who are now saying 'I meant to get that done last year, is it too late to start?'

Don't forget to allow time for the application to reach the LAA, for the LAA to process it and send it to the CAA, to arrive no later than 22nd March. Which is 10 working days before Sunday 8th April, due to the Easter holiday.

On behalf of AOPA, I have asked the CAA to afford the maximum possible priority to NPPL applications and the Authority has agree to see what it can do to help. We have also recommended to our members that all applications should have been sent to the LAA no later than Friday 16th March.

LAA are turning round NPPL(SSEA) applications very quickly, but there are the vagaries of the UK postal system to remember.

The LAA turned around my NPPL SLMG application same day and forwarded it to the CAA on Monday 12th. We're not far off the 10 working days now and as of this morning it doesn't look as if it's been processed (no money taken, and I had an initial class two medical and my old address was still on the CAA system). So I wouldn't cut it too fine!

I have an SSEA conversion booked for 7/8th, assuming all goes well I'll hand deliver my forms to Turweston that night. If not then I might have to wait and do it under EASA, at least there's a path for TMG.

There are two days of Bank Holiday prior to 08th April, and the final few days are a weekend! Where an error is found in an application, a couple of days is insufficient to rectify the issue since NPPL Advisers are volunteers who have other jobs.

May I strongly recommend applicants use MARCH 08th as the deadline to reach the Light Aircraft Association, to allow 10 working days for the LAA to process, correct any errors, and send to the CAA, then 10 working days at the CAA as per their website. Any later date may mean that an error in your application cannot be reviewed and rectified in time.

I would completely agree with the view that suggests people get paperwork in ASAP but as an aside if various organisations have suggested they would assist just how many applications are expected? I say because even with a commitment of just 1 person working on this 10 working days is a lot of work done! What do we think takes 70 hours of work to process?!

I spoke to the CAA today to check the status of an NPPL application they have had for just over the 10 working days now, with no communication or payment taken. They told me they are currently taking 12 working days to assess an application and mine is still in the queue. They then told me it should be assessed by the end of the week (13 or 14 working days from receipt depending on how you count it).
