Looking at pictures of a MAX cockpit, I spotted a strange "box" sitting on top of glareshield. Forgive me if it's a lame question (Airbus pilot here), but what is it? My guess would be something to do with HUD, but it's a strange place to put it (actually to put anything at all). Or maybe just some test/certification equipment?

I'm not allowed to post url/photos due to "too low post counter", but just google "737 max cockpit" to know what I mean

Id say its some test equipment , its not there on the final product .

Yes, test gear, not part of the production fit.

I especially like this view, showing Boeing's new "comfort-plus" pilot seating:

;)

...but it does reveal that the central third of the box is a digital chronometer (HRS - MINS - SECS). The panels left and right of that (in larger views) show buttons for DN - UP - DUPL(icate?) - UP - DN on each side, if that's any help.

Skimping on the seats, I see...
