View Full Version : To Flap or not to Flap 5? 737 NG

My route has a steep descent which a flap 5 flies beautifully, but my airline has asked us not to use flap 5, but have not explained why. That leaves me the options of overshooting, looping round and letting other flights in before me or hanging my gear out which I dont like to do for reasons of noise (and 'cause planes shouldn't fly with the gear down)

What reasons might there be for an airline to ask us not to use flap 5 during descent on a 737 ng?

Any ideas of how to lose lots of altitude without using flap 5?

Thanks

If you did fly it at flap 5, what speed would you fly? The flap 5 bug or something else?

I know a lot of airlines get hung up over the comment in the FCOM "do not use flaps as speed brakes". But they have no issue in you using F1?

Your route? Just the one is it? Do a lot of 'looping around' do you? Shouldn't you make it clear you are talking about a PC flight sim and not an airline?

Sorry should have been clearer, the last bit of the route coming back home is pretty much the same every time irrespective of where we have flown to. If we fly without flap 5 (or gear down) there is no way I can see of descending straight in. They have not indicated any issues with F1.

What specifically does your airline say about F5?

To paraphrase they say " Do not use flap 5". That's the problem they don't explain why and pilots who have been there longer say keep your head down and don't ask too many questions.

C86. You have to be more specific in explaining the scenario so we can offer better advice and try to answer your question. What you've said is too simple & too ambiguous.

No paraphrasing. Literally, what does you book say?

How about what airfield your flying into that is causing the issue?

Read the OP. He's a flight simmer! It's all in the syntax.

Well, if the OP were flying an aircraft and asked the question that was asked by the OP they'd be a fair way off "professional" in my opinion.
It's a bit like someone going onto a farming forum and saying " I normally move the sheep with my sheep dog but he is sick.....how else can I move my sheep....any ideas?"

and 'cause planes shouldn't fly with the gear down

I always thought it was traditional to lower the gear for landing.
