Happy birthday Barry. You signed my logbook after a flight together in 1979 when I was 17.

All in all I reckon you've aged better, and probably had more fun.

I hope I'm still as keen as you at 79.

Happy Birthday Barry. I too have a signed log book entry, from 1983.

Time flies and Barry has certainly flown alongside it in the grandest fashion!

Barry has certainly had an interesting and at times exciting career.

However he had a miraculous escape from this in the early 70's.

On 30/7/1972, four aircraft were performing a display at the Barnstormers Air Display at Weston-Super-Mare airfield, when a mid-air collision occurred at approximately 100 feet, between Stampe SV.4c G-AYGR and Tiger Moth G-ANMO. Both aircraft crashed but all aboard survived. Barry Tempest, the pilot of G-AYGR, escaped with only a large bruise and concussion. The split in his crash helmet shows how close the disaster the accident had been.

Per eyewitness report from the pilot of G-AYGR:

"I flew with the RAT's for the 1971 season in Stampe SV4C's flying G-AYGR or G-AYCK in the No. 2 slot. A fabulous experience especially since I had no formation aerobatic time or training prior to joining the team. Not only that, but my first airshow with the team was the afternoon of the day I joined.........!!!

One day I will write it all up for one of the aviation magazines but I can confirm that on the odd occasion adrenalin was brown. Great blokes and fantastic pilots. Had to pack it in at the end of the 1973 season as, O thee of little faith, I lacked confidence in Rothmans continuation as sponsors beyond the end of 1973 and I had a wife, two kids and a mortgage to keep happy along with my day job of being CFI at Sibson.

I did blot my copybook in 1972 when I totally demolished a borrowed G-AYGR in a mid-air collision at a Barnstormers display at Weston-super-Mare. Congratulations to an honourable and much respected gentleman of aviation.


Honour and respect are commodities that are earned and not given in this meritocracy that is aviation , and Barry certainly has earned his accolades even though he attempts to make light of much of it. A true example to others.

Beagle - I did not expect one as I have never sent her one either. I try, at age 79 now, to stay well clear of strange females, especially those of a predatory and litigious nature. At the AGM the look she gave me was such it would have killed a lesser person but it bounced off me.

Barry belated birthday wishes - I just checked my logbook and you did an instructor test for me in August 1975 from Sibson! I also recall doing a renewal with you in a Chipmunk at Leicester. After we'd done the obligatory spinning you asked me if you could do a few aeros. I recall you performing a hesitation roll the last two points of which we were in stall buffet but the aircraft behaved like it was on rails.

You also visited my father (Hector) when he retired from examining to hand over the gift of a print on behalf of the Panel and I happened to call in whilst you were there. Happy Days.

Many happy returns! And many thanks for your pragmatism and common sense when you were in GAD at the CAA, especially with respect to display approvals in the pre-DA days. I will never forget some of the memorable conversations that we had! Look after yourself.

A long time ago on the far away planet Sibson, it was Barry Tempest who took my difficulty with landings in hand and had me sit in the 150 while assistants raised and lowered the tail until I had memorised the correct landing attitude.

40 yrs and 2000 hours later I still wish occasionally that I'd paid more attention.

Damn, missed it by a couple of days, mate. Still, a couple of days out of 79 years and also out of all the years we’ve known each other, can’t be too much of an aberration. Must be the Alzheimers ! So, hope you had a great day, Barry, and so pleased you’re still a fully paid up and licenced member of the happy band again. Awards ? About time somebody recognised your achievements…….or have you upset somebody….again ?? :ouch:

Mere youngster.
I know of 2 pilots both well over 80, one who flies a Glasair and the other a PC12. The one flying the Glasair did a textbook 'gear up' landing a couple of years ago after one of the mainwheel legs failed to extend; he and the aircraft are flying again.

I had my aircraft maintained at Snoring for some years back in the 90's when Tindon Engineering were based there.

Lots of these old places have moved on and become closed shops.

Thanks for the birthday reminder. Now 85 and still here. Though I gave up flying a couple of years ago due to cost and effect of ageing. It was good while it lasted some 65 years, over 13,000 hours and the best times in General Aviation.

Happy belated Birthday Barry from Hector's son.

I always recall doing an instructor renewal with you in the Chipmunk. You showed me a hesitation roll and we were nudging the buffet in the last two points of the roll.

I will also remember when you brought the gift of the painting to my dad when he retired from the Panel.

I agree about the best days of GA - same with airlines from which I'm now happily retired.
