Hello all,

At Propeller overhaul time (6 Year) has anyone come across instances of Piston Rods needing to be replaced unexpectedly ?

Brief story is that I have 2 of these Props (C508 and C509 variants) and at the 2011 overhaul both Piston Rods (P/N D3474) needed replacing due to worn through plating and fretting. Now at 2017 overhaul and only done 160 Hours the new ones have worn through again having chafed against the internal feathering spring and steel bush at the rear of the Hub (I have asked McCauley about why this could happen and what design feature ensures that the spring base cannot touch the Piston Rod - waiting).

Low utilisation for the 6 years I know, but in my case there has definitely been no corrosion inside the Hubs and this is confirmed by my Prop Shop.

If you are an owner of one of these McCauley Prop variants (or perhaps oversee or even perform maintenance on them) you may have experienced this problem, any info appreciated. I am looking to see whether mine is an isolated incident or if it is more widespread.

As an owner you would definitely have been aware of this as it would have added an unexpected amount of approximately £2.5K (just over $3K) to your overhaul bill for each prop.

thanks for reading
