Hello you all,

Does anyone have a good reason why the bus always have their wing light on when on the ground? It is very intense when you pass its track, and I am hoping it is something else than see and avoid. Thanks

They don't. In getting on 20 years of Bus driving, I can't recall ever turning them on.

There is no good reason, the wing light separates the men from the boys.

No, and they don't all have them on.

In 11 years of Airbus FBW flying, nobody has ever mentioned to me, trained, or otherwise discussed the wing lights, (although I have used them myself to look at the leading edges in flight).

So they are probably like car fog lights. Everybody seems to be able to find them and switch them on - even when it is not foggy - but once on, most drivers completely forget that they have fog lights fitted, and go round blinding everybody. (Car fog light beams are not angled away from oncoming traffic as the headlights are).

I have seen a specific airline (with big fleet) which turns them on and it stays on when on ground. They must have it on their SOP's.

Not so nice.

Iberia you mean? Have you not seen the amarillo ground traffic racing around in MAD, I leave the strobes on just in case :)

Joking aside, I occasionally turn the wing light on, on dark stormy or foggy nights, especially on airports with lots of ground traffic. Believe it or not, an Airbus 320 is not very conspicuous from the side. If the logo light is inop, then there is only the tiny nav light and the beacon.

I woun't say everyone does this as i have no backing of it, but I can mention a lot of companies lately has used them constantly on the ground. I can name Swiss, Germanwings, Iberia, Air France, just to name a few. Is it only poor airmanship, or is it SOP that makes them taxi around with them on. I csn only imagine see and avoid as a reason, but this light simply does not make the whole difference and is more annoying than helping.
