View Full Version : Name the new Sydney airport

Now that Badgerys Creek looks finally to be on the go, I guess it's time to name it. We have Kingsford Smith International Airport at Mascot. So I'm looking at prominent, legendary, worthwhile, and thoroughly deserving Aussies to name this new airport in honour of. Some of the deserves I think...

Bronwyn Bishop international airport
Richard Wilkins international airport
Kochie International airport
Chock Mundine international airport
Kyrios Tomic international airport
Michael Slater international airport (probably an appropriate one considering airports are very annoying to most people and are rarely ever quiet)
That guy that won season 6 of Australian Idol international airport (what was his name again....I seem to have forgotten)

Wow, we are so blessed in this country to have so many deserving "heroes".

Suggested ground rules:

1. Not to be named after a politician.
2. Must be named after an Australian aviation identity.

There is a strong case for honouring Smithy but that would cause too much confusion. Suggestions:

Lawrence Hargrave
David Warren
P.G. Taylor

Typical Aussie Trivia: It has taken 50 year plus to get around to saying Yes we are going to build; it may be open with ONE runway sometime after 2020; will be ROAD ready BUT there is not going to be or plans for a bloody railway line.

God only knows what it will cost and how the projected cost will blow out particularly with normal union tactics.

The usual total lack of vision, myopic mediocre thinking and planning.

The best we can do is discuss a name for it which will probably be an Aboriginal name anyway!

Heaven help Me!

But my bet is that it will be named

Totally agree!

Stanwell
12th Dec 2016, 03:45
Well..
I might agree too - if the area was actually named after Del Badgery.
Unfortunately, however, the information I have is that it was named after the pioneering agriculturalist, James Badgery.
He was given a Government grant of 840 acres there in 1806 by, I understand, Governor Bligh.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

While we're batting worthy names around, second to P Gordon Taylor, I'd also put forward the name of another outstanding aviator
and airline proprietor, C Arthur Butler.
As a footnote, that greedy entrepreneur (literal meaning: enter and take) Reginald Myles Ansett neatly and very sneakily shafted
Arthur Butler to gain control of Butler Airways.
Many people never forgave him for that.

p.s. .. It just occurred to me .. perhaps Del Badgery might have been a descendant of James.
pps .. I just did a goggle and it seems he was indeed a direct descendant of James Badgery and therefore should be a front-runner in the considerations.

Melbourne airport was opened in 1970 and we're STILL waiting for an airport rail link. Given the amount invested in carparks and the EXHORBITANT amount they are charging to use them, I can't see the vested interests allowing one in my lifetime. Why call it an airport when you could name it:

Chadstone
Highpoint
Westfield Badgery
Pacific Fair

Or

Wilson
Secure

Or (if it was in Melbourne)

Skybus depot
Yellowcabs
Silver top

I think you guys need to get up to speed. These are large shopping centres where you can find a lot of parking options and in Melbourne they also serve as taxi and bus depots. They have an airfield attached which is also handy in Melbourne because unless you arrive in the 15 minutes of non-peak hour traffic you are better off doing all your shopping at the airport. Hell, its cheaper than putting in a rail line!

Either way if it's not got a politically correct name, I won't be going!

In good news I see it's 24/7. Crazy stuff, wait til the rest of the world find out they'll be copying us in no time.

Zlin,

I think there might be some challenge to this. John Duigan built and flew the first Australian designed aircraft in 1910.

There is a really good book about Duigan called 'A flying life' by David Crotty.

Why does it have to be named after a so-called luminary? Drive around Australia and you'll see all manner of bridges, viaducts, floodways, culverts etc named after local or national do-gooders. What a waste of effort, especially as it's generally impossible to establish just who the hell was, or is, John Smith, or what he did. Perhaps Edward Moses Obeid would be as appropriate as anything. Silly, innit?

Jeez Ken, it must be sad living with such a negative attitude....

'So called luminary' 'do-gooders' 'what a waste of effort' 'generally impossible to establish..'

A lot of people after whom things are named are neither 'so called luminaries' or 'do-gooders' and very often it very easy to establish who they are- read the plaque or 'google' them.

It's a great way to get people to think about history and the 'do-gooders' contribution to the area or society. Perhaps even a providing a little inspiration for people to get out from in front of their computers or TV and do something.

Perhaps 'government road A' or 'black metal bridge' would suit you?

Sad to see your default thoughts are negative. There's plenty of good out there Ken, just open your eyes and have a look; and I'm not being flippant, I really mean it. It's good or your health.

Runway and a terminal with no bus or rail to get there. Parking spaces will be available for $20 per 30 minutes. Airport makes a massive profit from excessive terminal rents, car parking, pickup and drop off fines at $200 per occurrence.

Airports in Australia where the banks make more yield by ripping people off on the ground than airlines do by transporting goods and passengers.

Since most airports these days are being transformed into shopping malls charging exorbitant prices, that just happen to have nearby runways, why not choose a name with similar reputation that is much better known outside Oz than most local luminaries - Ned Kelly International?

If funding is tight for the actual runway, they could turn the drag strip into the main runway. How about Robert Pearson International Drag-Strip? Capt. Pearson safely glide landed a 767 on a decommissioned runway, with minimal damage to the aircraft.

The new airport will be named by a corporate sponsor. Aviation professionals will be thinking 'where on earth did that name come from?' and the general public won't care what the name is. The corporate sponsor will have had little previous aviation exposure.
In a very short period of time, with a change of government, thousands of homes under new flight paths will have government supplied noise insulation, at zero cost to home owners. Eventually there will be a curfew imposed.

Or "Compensate Me Airport", from the number of scumbags who will have their hands out for a payoff due to loss of (pick one) amenity/ sleep/ sex life/ parking spot/ sunlight due aluminium overcast/ lawns due to chemtrail spillage/ serenity.

Considering most tourists probably "do Sydney" in a day, then spend a week seeing the outlying areas' including the Blue Mountains etc, I'm sure this will actually be good for tourism. Cheaper Accommodation, outside the CBD, and a busload of tourists head into the CBD for their dose of Circular Quay and Barangaroo, with Lunch in Chinatown or Darling Harbour and then maybe a quick tour of Bondi and Manly on the way back to the cheap hotel.

Who knows, maybe they'll be put up in Parramatta, or Rouse Hill and instead of a bus into the city, they'll all hop on the metro/train instead.

Only because scumbag LNP signed deals knowing they might lose the election and that the opposition and most of the community was against it. The writing was on the wall that it wouldn't go ahead if they lost but they signed the secret penalty deal out of pure spite.
