Now that Badgerys Creek looks finally to be on the go, I guess it's time to name it. We have Kingsford Smith International Airport at Mascot. So I'm looking at prominent, legendary, worthwhile, and thoroughly deserving Aussies to name this new airport in honour of. Some of the deserves I think...

Typical Aussie Trivia: It has taken 50 year plus to get around to saying Yes we are going to build; it may be open with ONE runway sometime after 2020; will be ROAD ready BUT there is not going to be or plans for a bloody railway line.

Unfortunately, however, the information I have is that it was named after the pioneering agriculturalist, James Badgery.
He was given a Government grant of 840 acres there in 1806 by, I understand, Governor Bligh.

While we're batting worthy names around, second to P Gordon Taylor, I'd also put forward the name of another outstanding aviator
and airline proprietor, C Arthur Butler.
As a footnote, that greedy entrepreneur (literal meaning: enter and take) Reginald Myles Ansett neatly and very sneakily shafted
Arthur Butler to gain control of Butler Airways.
Many people never forgave him for that.


p.s. .. It just occurred to me .. perhaps Del Badgery might have been a descendant of James.

Given the amount invested in carparks and the EXHORBITANT amount they are charging to use them, I can't see the vested interests allowing one in my lifetime. I think you guys need to get up to speed. These are large shopping centres where you can find a lot of parking options and in Melbourne they also serve as taxi and bus depots. They have an airfield attached which is also handy in Melbourne because unless you arrive in the 15 minutes of non-peak hour traffic you are better off doing all your shopping at the airport. Hell, its cheaper than putting in a rail line!

Either way if it's not got a politically correct name, I won't be going!

A lot of people after whom things are named are neither 'so called luminaries' or 'do-gooders' and very often it very easy to establish who they are- read the plaque or 'google' them.

It's a great way to get people to think about history and the 'do-gooders' contribution to the area or society. Perhaps even a providing a little inspiration for people to get out from in front of their computers or TV and do something.

Perhaps 'government road A' or 'black metal bridge' would suit you?

It should definitely not be named after Sir Hubert Wilkins. Currently the Australian Antarctic Division airfield in the Antarctic is appropriately named the Wilkins Runway as Sir Hubert was intimately involved in that continent.

The new airport will be named by a corporate sponsor. Aviation professionals will be thinking 'where on earth did that name come from?' and the general public won't care what the name is. The corporate sponsor will have had little previous aviation exposure.

Considering most tourists probably "do Sydney" in a day, then spend a week seeing the outlying areas' including the Blue Mountains etc, I'm sure this will actually be good for tourism. Cheaper Accommodation, outside the CBD, and a busload of tourists head into the CBD for their dose of Circular Quay and Barangaroo, with Lunch in Chinatown or Darling Harbour and then maybe a quick tour of Bondi and Manly on the way back to the cheap hotel.

Who knows, maybe they'll be put up in Parramatta, or Rouse Hill and instead of a bus into the city, they'll all hop on the metro/train instead.
