A lot o concern about the new raytheon system picked up by the local media.

Near miss happened recently and a lot of concern from ATCOs as well as pilots......

Hardly a cause for concern; where I used to work 5 miles was acceptable, or even 3 miles under certain conditions..

And you tell us that having two aircraft, same level at FL400, head on, 5NM apart (or even 15NM) was routine and "acceptable" at the place you used to work? :)

It doesn't have to be quite that dramatic ; if actions are in place to ensure that the requisite separation will appertain; ie climb or descent, change of headings etc. In these circumstances, 5nm separation would easily be achieved.

Hold the phone. Two guys trucking at each other at 8 miles per minute head to head sees that 15 miles disappear in less than a minute. The time to transmit, receive, process and action by the crew eats in to that pretty significantly. Couple that with a third party relaying the initial caution and they are down to nothing. Hardly a non event.

Well, airpolice, that's the biggest load of crap I've read in a while. If you bother to read the article, the aircraft got to 15nm nose to nose before a third party pointed out the conflict to the controller. So, that is some pretty crappy equipment if it isn't squealing earlier than that. At FL400, lateral avoiding action involving commercial jet aircraft in the described scenario might get you a mile or two- at most. The only way you might save it is with vertical.
Agreed separation? Know about each other? Non issue? You might be better off restricting your opinions to things you know about.

Another glitch, the worst so far in terms of the time span, hit the airport’s new air traffic control system on Monday, halting outbound flights for four minutes.
The fault was observed at about noon, when part of the flight data disappeared from radar screens for 75 seconds before reappearing, a Civil Aviation Department spokeswoman said.

75 seconds of silence!!! So radar systems can speak now.They lost 2 or 3 departures,had ADS-B backup and it was partially human error that caused it.Crisis what crisis.:bored:
