C-GTNG. From FlightAware, didn't even make it five miles from the airport. Max reported altitude was 7000 feet. Looks like they were making a right turn out when reporting ended at 4800 feet in a 2,200 fpm descent.

Scary.

RIP

What we know

A Cessna Citation departed Kelowna, British Columbia (CYLW) at 21:32 (Pacific Daylight Time), destined for Calgary/Springbank Airport, (CYWB).
The aircraft struck terrain approximately 11 km north of Kelowna Airport at approximately 21:40 local time (Pacific Daylight Time).
At this time we believe there was one pilot and 3 passengers on board, all of whom sustained fatal injuries.
The aircraft was not equipped with, nor was it required to carry, a Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) or a Flight Data Recorder (FDR); however, the team will be reviewing any electronic components on the aircraft from which they can retrieve data to help understand the flight profile.
The air‎craft was destroyed from high deceleration forces after a vertical descent.
There were no emergency or distress calls made. No emergency locator transmitter signal was received.

Many news outlets report the accident A/C disappeared from radar at an altitude of 8,600 feet. Would be interested to know the source of that info.

The weather was raining and overcast with a surface temperature of 7 Celsius at the time of departure. The CYLW 140500Z METAR also remarked the barometric pressure was falling rapidly.

The aircraft was a privately owned Cessna Citation 500, built in 1974, i.e. 42 years old. No information on air-frame time or number of cycles. Pilot was a quiet, professional ex-RCMP guy..

The ICAO aerodrome location identifier for Springbank is CYBW, not CYWB as prevously posted..

Bit more info Lack of data may leave Prentice crash unsolved - The Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/lack-of-data-may-leave-prentice-crash-unsolved/article32385452/?cmpid=rss1&google_editors_picks=true)

Maybe the Pilot had an aneurysm or became disoriented- it was dark and late for a work day. ...or a problem with the aircraft surfaced right after take off.
Surprised they didn't retrofit a black box of sorts in this older jet aircraft . Doest leave much for the investigators to work with..

There are many certified modifications for the Cessna C500/501 series. Almost all of the modifications are designed to enhance performance. There is no information available if the crashed aircraft had any of the after-market MODS installed.
