So that's what's what it was! I heard it but didn't see it standing outside Tesco on Newmarket Road. It may have been a beat-up, or a touch-n-go because it definitely went off upwind making a lot of noise.

Nah, take too long to get it along Newmarket Road from Marshall's. There was one of those huge gin-palaces made in Northampton on the way to launch in Ipswich docks. For non-locals, yes they do go through the middle of Cambridge, they're too high to fit under the bridges of the northern bypass aka A14.
