Which company has hoodwinked the government into believing there is a shortage of pilots in this country?

Blazes....
Are there any jobs that are not on the CSOL and thus available for a 457 visa ?

The CSOL list is a different beast to the 457 one. Airline Pilot is NOT on the 457 list.

That's not how I read the entry for 457 visas at https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/Empl/Visa-options-comparison-charts where it says "Occupation must be on the prevailing Consolidated Skilled Occupations List ..."

Time to talk to your MP?

Before anyone goes writing indignantly to their MP they should probably try and develop an understanding of what the Consolidated Skills Occupation List is and how it relates to the visa process. A clue can be found in the pre-amble to the CSOL and post #2 above...

The CSOL list is a different beast to the 457 one. Airline Pilot is NOT on the 457 list.
Where is "the 457 list" to be found then?

VARA has several 457 pilots. Hardly breaking news.

Where else should airlines get pilots with experience on certain types or in certain operations? Just because there are lots of people around with pilot licences does not necessarily make them qualified to fly certain types at short notice?

I wouldn't be surprised if there were employers of pilots in this country trying to circumvent local pilots. When a potential employee fronts you in an interview and knows the award backwards but doesn't know what a gyro is or how it works there are issues. When an employee breaks a component in an aircraft, causes $900 damage due to their negligence but the most important part of his day is getting out of work on time, there are issues. Industrial relations has swung so far to the employee it makes almost impossible to staff you business with any certainty. Until Australians learn how to do a fair days work for a fair days pay this 457 business will continue.

What is it about the air in Australia that makes it different from the rest of the world? Why is it that every time an employer wants to introduce a new type, they must have pilots with appropriate time on type? It seems very odd to me that types such as the Electra, B707, DC9 and B727 were all successfully introduced without accident or incident, but an ATR72 or B777 requires the importation of current-on-type pilots.

Manufacturers sell these aircraft to operators all around the world, yet we seem to have an almost uniquely Australian requirement to insist on pilots with prior experience on type. No employer is going to miss the opportunity to avoid training costs; why do we tolerate this stupidity?

The air in Australia is different:
COBT 0145
Cross ARBEY at 0245 250 kts.
*crosses ARBEY 250 exactly on time*
Reduce to 220 kts.... "Can we get a height waiver?" "No" *deploys speed brakes which make lots of noise but has no effect...

Shortly after..
Cancel speed restrictions.
Can you accept track shortening?
Track to a 3 mile final maintain 200 kts as long as possible.
During roll at 140 kts "have you got the rapid?"

LOL!

There is not a specific item for "Airline pilot", but sandwiched between "Technical Sales Representatives nec" and "Master Fisher" there are the following occupations,

"Aeroplane Pilot"
"Air Traffic Controller"
"Flying Instructor"
"Helicopter Pilot"
"Air Transport Professionals nec"

Where the airline is large/rich enough they will engage another airline that operates the type to provide line sectors to give their pilots experience on the type. Where the type is a new aircraft they will find people/training for the closest comparable aircraft (eg 777 for 787). I doubt they do this because they want to but because their insurers, financiers or lessors insist on it.

Anyone see airline pilot?
No, because the list you linked to is the SOL which shows the occupations available for temporary graduate, independent or family sponsored visas.

The list of occupations eligible for a 457 visa is found on the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List linked previously by Biggles.

Captains or FOs?

How on earth could they claim they need 457s when they are knocking back 50-75% of guys each recruitment day? Surely this proportion of pilots aren't so retarded, sorry unskilled, they can't fly Dash 8s?

Only FO's.

They have over 100 FO's who meet the upgrade requirements. Only a handful are 'in the command pool'
