Military coup going on right now in Turkey, with airports apparently closed. Turkish Airlines flights are all landing, but others diverting (BA680 now heading to Sofia instead).

Just frequent SLF here, but hope everybody in the industry stays safe.

Eurocontrol says the following
Airports

Turkish situation.
Although the situation is unclear to the staff at Istanbul Ataturk and at Ankara ACC, our latest information is as follows:
Ataturk was open to international arrivals. However, due to the absence of departures since 2031 UTC, the airport is now full (no stands or parking spaces available).
Ataturk hope to re-commence international departures shortly, but until they do, all inbound flights to Ataturk are being diverted.
Ankara ACC say that they are operating normally.

Currently, there are NO REGULATIONS applied at any Turkish aerodromes, nor are there any enroute regulations applied.

Airspace

As above - no regulations applied in Turkish airspace.

Hi to all,
Even if some airports are open this is not the place to be right now.
Airlines should consider the situation and do not go there.
My two cent,
Safe flights to you all.

President Erdogan's plane 'returns to Istanbul' as claims coup appears to have failed

Turkish officials say President Erdogan’s plane is returning to Istanbul, while claiming the coup appears to have failed.

An official said all government heads were in charge of their offices.

However this is not confirmed and broadcaster NTV says two people have been killed in Istanbul clashes.

I understand no direct flights are allowed from Turkey to the US by any carrier and no US carriers or FAA registered pilots are allowed to use Turkey. the only exception is US pilots who work for none US carriers.

I was expecting to see an update saying "power back on" and possibly "Operations to resume in 48 hours" or something .. but, nothing, so presumably they are still running on generators.

One update has appeared on the Incirlik facebook page:

For those of you stationed here who are unable to check your email for the latest CAT directives, please send a private message to our Facebook inbox for information on facility hours.

Make of that what you will ...

I find it interesting that Turkey is considered too dangerous for USA planes and pilots but apparently not for Europeans...

The CAA don't even have a stated position on the matter.

(USA Today article dated 16 July). Is it still in effect or did it get lifted? (I had a suspicion that the ban might have been related to the closing if Incirlik, but I could be wrong as I can't confirm that).

Apparently 42 military helicopters have gone 'missing' since the failed coup last Friday, and the Istanbul police is on the lookout.

From RT: https://www.rt.com/news/351776-istanbul-emergency-police-f16-erdogan/

Turkish police have urgently ramped up their presence in Istanbul, with special forces and military hardware deployed to the streets and orders to down aircraft without warning, following unconfirmed reports of rebel helicopters approaching the city. Really?! :ooh:

and Sputnik,

42 Helicopters Missing in Turkey Sparking Concerns of a Second Coup Attempt (http://sputniknews.com/news/20160717/1043162524/helicopters-turkey-coup-erdogan-weapons.html)

With the accidental downing of MH17 in mind, one has to wonder how safe Turkish airspace really is if the military, apparently, can not account for some of it's equipment?

Clip I was just wondering if they landed on the actual night of the uprising. As it may have ended rather differently, giving the crews a "surprise holiday"
