Hi

Does a flying instructor have to be affiliated to an ATO in order to provide differences training (and sign-off) in a privately owned aircraft?

Thanks

No. Differences can still be done in the wild. If you are an LAA member you can also avail yourself of the LAA Coaching Scheme.

By day I am Head of Training of an ATO and by night I am an LAA Coach..... Like batman..... :)

Many thanks - that's answered my (and the instructor's) question!

No, unless the aircraft Type Certificate holder has prescribed in the OSD that differences training shall be conducted under the auspices of an ATO.

There is an impending change to the requirements in NPA 2014-29, although it will not usually apply to differences training in SEP or MEP aeroplanes.

FCL.710 Class and type ratings - variants
(a)....
(b) When the ‘List of type of aircraft’ published by the Agency requires differences training or when mandated by the OSD, this differences training shall be conducted at an ATO.
(c) Notwithstanding the requirement in (b), differences training for SEP and MEP aeroplanes may be conducted by an appropriately qualified instructor unless mandated otherwise by the OSD.

A cynic might believe that this is being done simply to protect the revenue streams of certain national authorities.

Thanks everyone - I'm simply (?) moving from an Archer to an Arrow, so I guess FCL710 (b) won't apply

No it won't. That was just a usual PPrune water muddying post that had no relevance to your original question...... :)
