View Full Version : Clubs at Elstree?

I first obtained my PPL with Cabair at Elstree many years ago, but they've since gone under. Having recently relocated back to the UK, I am now looking for a home airfield (and club) again, and am leaning towards Elstree, given how convenient it is to access from central London. Can anyone please point me in the right direction of an active club based there? I will need a couple of hours initially with an instructor to get my rusty wings back in shape, but otherwise anticipate spending most of my hours in the air on recreational flights across the country, ideally with a couple of mates from the club. My experience has been almost entirely in PA-28 diesel aircraft, so a club with a fleet of those aircraft will be most desirable, though I am open to converting onto a different aircraft model/variant if necessary. I have a couple of additional PPL ratings that will need to be renewed at some point later this year (namely the IR(R) and aerobatic ratings), so will need a club that has the appropriate examining capabilities.

Many thanks in advance.

There are around 10 or more Clubs and Schools at Elstree. Feel free to PM me for more detail...............

...or you could try Denham, also easily accessible from London Marylebone or the A40. WLAC is a bit far out, I'd have thought (in both senses:)) but realistically the only option for aeros West of London.

Elstree is great, I have worked there onvand off since 2007 and it has changed for the better in many ways.

There are quite a few schools so it's worth doing your homework, picking a school at Elstree depends on the type of experience you want from it, IE the club feel, fly outs etc or just rock up, hire and fly. There's also a new Taxiway to the runway now, so 3 in total making life easier and quicker for all.

Pop down, walk about and grab some food in the restaurant.

Thanks all. WLAC seems to be ideal in all aspects except for the distance - as you mentioned TOO, it's rather far out. Elstree remains my first choice, so I'll need to spend a little more time exploring the options there. Tips and pointers in that regard are very much welcome.

MAK Aviation are pretty good. They have PA28's as well as a Grumman Cougar if that helps.

Hi RedKnight

Like you I learnt with Cabair many years ago on diesel PA28s. Some of those instructors are now at flyer's flying school if you want to fly with them. A lot of the PA28s for hire at Elstree are avgas so you will just need to do a short familiarisation on those.

Good luck

Fantastic tip, thank you. I recognise a few names on the Flyers Flying School website. Have gotten in touch with Vicky, will see where we get with that.
