At least they have a security strategy...as opposed to a knee-jerk to whatever's in yesterday's Daily Mail.

It's not a security strategy! It's a propaganda statement, no more. If it were a real security strategy it would identify real threats and outline how they would be countered.

"for the first time"

Thats a joke. Russia and the Russians are obsessed with getting revenge for cold war. Nato destroyed the empire Nato stands in their way to get it back.

Here's friendly Russian threatening to Nuke a Nato capital, in 2008

As ridiculous as the Russian propaganda is, I am sure NATO members collectively and individually take it seriously. Vlad the Terrible is one dangerous fellow.

Pretty sure that starting a war won't solve that problem, as wars are very, very expensive.

Pretty sure that starting a war won't solve that problem, as wars are very, very expensive.

As history shows, that's usually the very reason for starting a war.

ORAC, it's US&A, not USA.

That would be incorrect. Noting the usual wind up antics from Thelma today.

I'm pretty sure he's using that authoritative, educational documentary presenter, Borat, as the reference for that. :ok:

The articles behind the URLs in the first post are nothing but the authors' own interpretations of the original document. I used to never read such docs because they are just general propaganda published mainly for housewives. Real stuff is in the General Staff and FSB documents and obviously secret. However, having browsed the official doc quickly now (in Russian), I could not find anything related to direct pointing to the US as a threat or, even worse, an enemy. It is rather said that expansion of NATO and its appearance on the Russian borders generates certain threats. IMHO, this is true, but so what? Stupid Gorbachyov pulled everything out and slowly this "vacuum" has been filled in by NATO, "trivial physics".
Growth of the Russian military power is obviously a threat to the West, but again, so what? Russia was not modernizing its weapons since late 80's, everything has got "rusty" and sooner or later should have been updated.

We live in such a world for some 70 years, and if the ruling politicians can be wise enough, nothing happens. Just not let idiots, paranoids and neurotics be close to the decision making.

IMHO all (Europe, Russia, US) are stupid enough not to see that if they do not consolidate in some way in the near future, the growing islamic extremism will bring real harm and pain to all of them/us. All those IS/Daesh, Al Qaeda, Taliban are just the beginning. And these guys do not negotiate, sign treaties, agree on inspections, etc. They just shoot, cut heads and blow up cities and civilians. Killing their leaders does not help, birth rate in these countries is way higher than in "white" ones, thus the future does not look optimistic if really new approaches are not found.

Well the solution with Daesh is simple: Kill. Them. All.

Its not one we can or want to apply to Russia.
