I don't think they are. There's more than one ghost airport in Spain!

All part of the socialist government's ideal that every province had to have an airport so yip quite a few ghost airports and some white elephants that are still breathing (just!).


The massive investment in High Speed Trains (AVE) didn't help the internal aviation market either.

Don't be so harsh on Castellon airport - it will see scheduled flights with Ryanair from Stansted and Bristol from mid September. Marketing support payments may of course be involved... !
Admittedly no other airline seems interested in CDT though...

That whole second runway fiasco at malaga is just baking in the sun with nothin more than tumble weed to annoy it...

Theres nothin wrong with the high speed trains...show up at the station get on the train and go! Arrive at destination, get off and leave....ill leave it up to all u jet heads to rewrite this from an air travellers prospective...once u arrive and catch up with us railheads

Actually the second runway at Malaga is been used occasionally as the airport is handling a lot more traffic this summer although I admit it was really a waste of money. Regarding the AVE high speed trains they certainly have reduced the number of domestic flights in Spain - especially Barcelona-Madrid - and with another 1,000 kilometres of track coming on stream this year domestic services will be further eroded plus the rail fares are quite reasonable not like some country I could mention!
Regarding Cuidad Real - passed by last year, excellent infrastructure but only has a small catchment area but good luck to the new owners - they will need it.

Some degree of subsidy but their track is paid for by the EU, Spain hasn`t enough money left to put on a fireworks show...and as the second largest contributor to said funds, they get all the fun of cheap railways :ugh:

There is a definite solution, though. Now they just have to build a million-city somewhere nearby and populate it. Why the construction of an airport couldn't be the first thing on the list? :}

Could they not turn the place Into something similar to Hahn airport? Turn it into a massive cargo and low cost hub.

Found the trains in Spain far more expensive than Germany or Italy. And a total con when it comes to the difference between first class and other classes of travel.

I hope the stansted to castellon route survives.

The airport is only about 15km from my boat.

Hate to break it to people but Ciudad real and Castellon are two different airports that are hundreds of miles away from each other.

Personally I think Castellon has the better chance of survival - bigger catchment area but could take some traffic away from nearby Valencia. Superb places to visit along the coast: Segunto, Penascola (where part of El Cid was made) etc. but good luck to both airports.

No, the article is correct. No mention of Castellon. FR did serve Ciudad Real for a while, maybe 3x weekly from STN. In addition to Vieling mentioned, I'm sure Air Berlin used to serve Palma.

No great now but one of the better decisions made in Spain.

Well when fools are prepared to pay, a business would be stupid not to.

Could they not turn the place Into something similar to Hahn airport? Turn it into a massive cargo and low cost hub.

Difficult, Hahn while in the middle of nowhere is located on one of the most densely populated regions in Europe and has quick access to many cities with industry.

The only box the airport ticks is close proximity to to high speed rail which would require the owners to foot the bill to link up and for a cargo hub however rail freight would have it's own restrictions which may not help matters.

Not sure Aena would allow it to impact on VLC, a little like nobody wants to leave Murcia, Aena dragging their heels and airlines not pleased either.

Not forgetting the flight restrictions where it was built.

I went there a couple of days ago... It has been sold to a new owner, but so far no aircraft anywhere.

Nice rousing music in the video, but if it's meant to be a promotional video the photography is lousy - just ends up emphasising that this is an airport in the middle of nowhere with no customers.

Waking up a very old thread... is this airport currently functioning at a sufficient level to be able to act as a storage location for aircraft ? Perhaps a more suitable climate than others that come to mind

Having visited the airport a little bit ago the climate I would suggest is not that conducive for storage. Teruel is the one - unbelievably dry and in one of the quietest areas of Spain and that is saying something!

The only time I was in Teruel, there were hail stones the size of table tennis balls.
