Apparently an Emirates 380 (EK413) from SYD to DXB made an emergency landing in CMB a short time ago. As many of us know, CMB is an emergency alternate as it doesn't presently handle 380's.

Emirates A380 makes emergency landing in Colombo | News , Middle East | THE DAILY STAR (http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Middle-East/2015/Jun-26/303883-emirates-a380-makes-emergency-landing-in-colombo.ashx?utm_content=buffer7bf59&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer)

COLOMBO: An Emirates A380 plane with more than 500 people on board made an emergency landing in Sri Lanka Friday after pilots detected smoke in the cockpit, aviation officials said.
The aircraft, which landed safely in Colombo, was 320 nautical miles (around 600 kilometers) east of the city when pilots made a distress call.
"The pilots said May Day, May Day, and we activated all our emergency services and brought the aircraft to a safe landing," the airport's chief air navigation services officer Crishanthi Tissera told AFP.
She said the pilots reported smoke in the cockpit, leading airport managers to place firefighters and medical units on standby.
The plane landed 39 minutes after the first distress call and all 471 passengers and 30 crew disembarked safely.
A statement from the airline said the plane had suffered a "technical fault" and was diverted to Colombo, without giving details.
Emirates carried out its first A380 landing in Colombo in 2012, but the airport has yet to be upgraded to handle the biggest passenger airliner.
The airline said passengers were being transferred to other Emirates flights.

"The pilots said May Day, May Day, and we activated all our emergency services and brought the aircraft to a safe landing,"

....so the A380 can now be flown via remote control by any ATC unit that "feels the urge or call" if you like?? Impressive :D ....but scary at the same time

Jeeeze...

I wonder what really happened? Calling "May Day May Day" and making a "distress call" doesn't seem to fit the available data;
The flight (A6-EDM) appeared in the Sri Lanka area around 22:02 GMT, squawking 1433, descended at somewhere around 3,000ft/min and never squawked 7700.
Do they have the Daily Mail in Sri Lanka?

Out of curiosity what would be the typical emergency descent rate of a 380?

Uncontrolled smoke is a "Mayday" situation. The non-normal would not involve an emergency descent, and you might consider delaying descent to minimize transit time to the diversion airport. It is not SOP to squark 7700 if already identified with a discrete code.

It "could" however, involve a swift descent (some may call it an emergency descent) to a lower level to facilitate smoke removal.

Out of curiosity what would be the typical emergency descent rate of a 380?
5000'/min is easily attainable, depending on speed selected.

Well done to the crew.

Good thing they were not somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean, hours from anywhere....scary thought!

Just for the newspaper scribes out there, an A380 is a low wing Cessna. Surprised there wasn't reports of mass hysteria etc aboard the Cessna as it plummeted towards the ground. Well done to the newspaper for a bit of accurate reporting for a change.

Sober Lark,

CMB has been listed as an A380 Alternate since May 2015.

Yeah, was thinking of a slower speed rather than Vne. Saw 8,500-9,000 recently in the sim!

I hate ending up behind an A380 crew at the slow moving LAX crew customs.
