View Full Version : CAA PPL Proficiency Check in Ireland - Any where i can do it

Hi There,

I am hoping someone can give me some advice on a couple of issues I have with my PPL and renewal.
.
I did not pay enough attention to when my PPL SEP rating should have been revalidated, and missed the date to have it done by so I left flying for a while after that.

My licence was issued on the 26-08-11, but I should have revalidated by 03-04-13, this is the mistake I made, I thought I had until August 2013 not April.

So I now i think i have to pass a proficiency check.
This has to be completed at an Approved Training Organisation. Does this have to be CAA approved or EASA, could I do all this with a school in Ireland with an IAA examiner as that is where I live, or do I have to go to a CAA approved school in the UK or Northern Ireland. I also need a ready to test form, this is why i'm not sure if i can do it in Ireland.

Now my licence is up for renewal by 25-08-16, do I need to have a valid SEP rating before I can do this. And when it is renewed will it be an EASA licence.

Or can I just renew it and not have a valid rating meaning I’m grounded. And all I have to do is pass a proficiency check whenever.
Once a proficiency check is passed does the renew date come from the date of that pass 2 years on or from the original revalidation date.

Once I let my SEP rating expire does it matter when I revalidate.

I hope you can make sense of that, and really appreciate your help in answering my questions.

Any EASA examiner can conduct the proficiency check but they will need to read this CAA document (http://www.caa.co.uk/application.aspx?catid=33&pagetype=65&appid=11&mode=detail&id=6317&filter=2) first.

Once I let my SEP rating expire does it matter when I revalidate.To a certain extent, yes. AMC1 FCL.740(b)(1) 'suggests' that the longer you leave it the more re-training you will have to do.

Even if my rating has expired is it still alright.

"If the rating has expired you cannot fly as a pilot in command until it has been renewed. To renew your SEP(land) rating you need to pass a proficiency check with an examiner who will require a 'ready for test' certificate signed by a Registered Training Facility (until 8 April 2015) or Approved Training Organisation, which may mean having to complete refresher training with them first."

What about this Registered Training Facility (until 8 April 2015) or Approved Training Organisation

Bit confusing, i e-mailed the CAA their response time is 18 days.

I'm assuming that you have a UK issued JAA Licence.

You cannot 'revalidate' a rating once it has expired. You have to 'renew' it.

To do so, you should visit your local ATO/RF (Flying School) and have the HOT/CFI asses how much, if any, training you will need to pass the Flight Test (PC)
Once you have completed the required training, (if any) and been issued with a Course Completion Certificate(CCC), you then take your CCC to any EASA PPL Flight Examiner(FE), and complete the PC.

If the FE is not authorised by the UK, he/she will have to complete the UK National Briefing from the CAA.

You are then good to go until your JAA Licence expires on 26-8-16, by which time you will have to have your licence re-issued as an EASA one.

I copied the 8th April 2015 from the CAA website.
Can i renew the licence without a valid SEP rating.

Yes, but you will loose the SEP, and have to pay to have it added to your EASA Licence afterwards.

Best to Renew the SEP first, then it will transfer automatically to your new EASA Licence without extra charge.

The whole flippin EASA system - what should be a simple task is made overly complicated with forms upon forms, and pigeon english AMCs to boot!!

It is very complicated, as sometimes you find different information and then you may interpret differently.

Anyway, i have figured out what's needed. Thanks MJ, your information was correct.

I have contacted a few schools and was accidently speaking to examiner, all of whom will be able to sort it out.

Sorry to jump onto this discussion.

But just curious if any Irish based examiners to do UK CAA bi annual sign off that have taildragger experience???
