Great guy! I was intrigued by the Orcadian French accent too. Or vice versa.
A bit more about the aeroplane would have been useful - several come to mind but I'm not brave enough here to dare suggest my guess from that photo.

Would seem to be a Druine Turbulent, which one would expect for a Frenchman.
