--Hey guys!

Talking with an EZY FO after landing, he told me he is base first officer, his duty is to assist the base capt. concerning safety issues and the SMS Safety reporting management.
Is this role common in other airlines too?
Is this role important for a FO and a "honour" to receive?

It's very common. The manager role usually means alot of responsibilities and tasks to be taken care of which can be difficult to do all on your own, that's where the assistants come in handy.

For an assistant that usually means no more free time and private life and alot of responsibility, however it is very rewarding and you will learn alot and the work you do really is very important.

In some places also known as the base captain bitch

especially if done for free.

Well it is not done for free, % uplift in salary and a set daily rate per office day.

Sounds like what in this country is usually referred to as Assistant Chief Pilot. My current airline doesn't have such a position, but my previous two did.
