For those who might have spent a happy weekend or two over the years at an airshow or other at RAF Mildenhall, the sad news is that it will close in the near future amongst other assets of the USAF in Europe U.S. Air Force's European consolidation results announced (http://www.usafe.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123435798)

It surprises me that such a busy and big base would be deemed surplus, whilst Lakenheath will remain, but I suppose hardened shelters are expensive to build these days.

the sad news is that it will close in the near futureThe linked article talks about consolidation "within seven years", with completion "after 2020", so it looks like we'll be continuing to see Ospreys and Stratotankers for a while yet.

The USAF Brigadier General said on R4 today that the same capability will exist, they're closing the base to save infrastructure costs.
