View Full Version : UK CAA JAR-FCL ATPL about to expire

I'm hoping someone can help me understand this EASA mess, where I stand and what needs to be done.

I have a UK CAA issued JAR-FCL ATPL which needs to be reissued before 31 January 2015. Only type on it is the B744.

My last Instrument Rating test (B744) on this licence (I have ATPLs from 3 other countries) was in August 2010. I last exercised the privileges of this licence in September 2010.

Since late 2010 I have been flying on my Australian ATPL and only doing Instrument Rating renewals for the Aussie licence.

I started wading through the 906 pages of CAP 804 to see what I need to do to have my UK licence reissued and now have a splitting headache!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Am I screwed? Please tell me I do not have to go to the UK and hire a sim and do a check just to keep my European (UK) licence?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

PS. I should add that, while my current type is the B777, I really don't need this or any additional type ratings added to the B744 currently on my UK Licence as I don't intend to use it any time soon. I just don't want it to lapse or be cancelled after all the blood, sweat and tears I went through to obtain it 20 years ago!!!

I'm sure EASA require you to have current/ valid Type Rating to keep an ATPL. You would have to revalidate the B744 , expensive!! The IR is good to renew for 5 years ( much paperwork and certificates of competence from an ATO if you let it expire over 12 months) then you have to start again.

As you have a JAA ATPL you can use SRG 1104 to obtain a lifetime EASA ATPL on the basis of just holding an EASA Class 1 medical. The expired ratings will appear on the back of the licence and can be reinstated later.

When I sent Form SRG 1104 to CAA last year to renew my ATPL, it was returned with information that a current Type Rating is required for issue. My B744 rating was not current and I downgraded to PPL???

A JAA ATPL is deemed to be an EASA licence, so if it is current the CAA should issue an EASA licence without valid class/type ratings as it is, simplistically, a swap.

If it is a renewal, then it falls into the issue of a licence, so valid class/type rating plus medical required.

Thanks for all the advice chaps. It appears Whopity is correct.

I got through to a helpful guy in Licencing at Gatwick who advised that I needed to complete the following:

Class 1 Medical Renewal,

Form SRG1102 Application to Renew UK Licence,

Form SRG1104 Application for EASA Part-FCL Pilot Licence - Conversion of an Existing National or JAR-FCL Licence Issued by the United Kingdom.

In a similar situation myself, but managed to get the EASA licence issued last year.

Two problems that you may encounter.
1) There is no CAA approved doctor in Australia to do your medical. I ended up having to go to New Zealand

2) My JAR ATPL which I was converting to a EASA ATPL only showed that I had English Language Proficiency, this gets upgraded to ELP6 at your next OPC. I didn't do another OPC, and ended up flying overseas. Getting ELP6 for the issuance of your licence could be problematical

Yes, you are correct. I have to schlep over to AKL (Dr Anton Wiles at Remeura) in order to do the medical. You would think there would be at least one enterprising doctor here in Australia who would want to add the UK to his list of overseas approvals...

My JAR ATPL just says "Language Proficiency: English". I will call them back at Gatwick later tonight to ask about ELP6.

Hi Pogun. You must be able to show to the CAA that you have ELP4 or above (you need this to hold a FRTOL), and anyway will be ELP6 for you. If you're lucky previous training records may show this, if a TRE has ticked the right box, so it might be worth checking, if that's possible. Alternatively, you can get a TRE to sign Form SRG1199, and submit that with your application, which is what I've just done; and so can also confirm that my current rating is simply transferred from my JAR Licenece to my EASA Licence, as are any previously held ratings, now lapsed, which are also included.

It seems on this occasion I AM lucky!

The examiner that did my last sim check back in 2010 apparently ticked the right box according to CAA at Gatwick!

So no ridiculous additional English proficiency certification required.

Nice to hear somebody is having some luck ! Like you I thought the English language thing was ridiculous, but then I remembered I was born in Liverpool, and I though "fair enough . . . "

Hi Guys I am looking for advice
MY JAA UK ATPL expired last december 20th 2015
The only rating was an ATR72 used for converting my ICAO licence to that one but that rating is long expired
On the 10th december I did my medical EASA class I

How can I renew this ATPL by reformatting it as EASA and to keep EPL level 6 I did acquire during the conversion (i kept the copy of the signed form)

I currently fly A330 and A340 on my ICAO licence but I plan to return flying in Europe.
