I see in todays publications there has been an enormous change in the airspace south of Inverness.
How much I can't tell as the communication is full of lat / longs and doesn't actually provide a map (not like it's 2014 or anything . . )

A question, if you would indulge me.

If I take off in my Glider, find some half decent lift and decide to fly East to west across Scotland (Starting just West of the Aberdeen CTA) at between FL90 and FL190,say 25km south of Inverness.

What do I have to do tomorrow that I didn't have to do yesterday ?

When will the new maps be available ?

Cheers.

There is a chart at the end of this document:

The route and level you mention would involve crossing N560. Under VFR, you would require a transponder.

Exactly. Only difference is you now need a transponder to enter it, to ensure TCAS works on IFR in the same area

Many thanks for the swift reply.

Any idea if there is a letter of agreement between the BGA and Inverness ATC ?

There are also a lot of Information Notices out there that talk all about this! Sorry, rubbish with posting links but a quick search on the CAA website under INs should find them!

TMZ = Mode S transponder

Mode S Transponder, effectively, Inverness have cut off the west of Scotland from Gliders.
Nice of them for a couple of commercial flights a day . . It was so busy there . .

Inverness is an approach unit.The main controlling authority on N560 is Scottish Control at Prestwick.Bit harsh on INV and it has more than 2 commercial movements a day.:hmm:

Gents, no need to panic....

Detailed below are the changes to route structure:

W6D becomes Y906 FL 55 to FL195; SYY via ULLAP to INV
A1D AKIVO to GOW has been removed and is now Class G;

Class E airspace is controlled airspace in which IFR and VFR flights are permitted, but only IFR flights require a clearance. IFR flights also require continuous two way communications.

The Class E airspace replacing Class F is additionally designated as a Transponder Mandatory Zone (TMZ), hence "Class E+".

The “See and avoid” principle also applies below FL100 in the Class E airway; with a speed limit of 250 kts.

A TMZ may be established for overriding safety reasons, where the airspace classification would not ordinarily require aircraft to carry a transponder. The pilot of an aircraft that wishes to operate in a TMZ without such serviceable transponder equipment may be granted access to the TMZ subject to specific ATC approval.

Can an aircraft enter the airway with no transponder?

· IFR – may NOT enter the airway without a functioning transponder;
· VFR – may enter the airway without a functioning transponder,

....but must be in radio contact with the controlling authority prior to entering the airspace, or operate in accordance with agreed procedures.

I hope this helps,

Rocky01.

Airwave,
Unless things have changed inside 40nm from INV airfield and below FL130 is Inverness airspace.They don't always have radar open,and often have trouble talking to traffic to the south due to terrain.If I can help,PM me and I can put you in contact with controllers there who are up to speed.
Love to go Glider Guiding sometime..:cool:

....but must be in radio contact with the controlling authority prior to entering the airspace,

As far as I understand it, if you are VFR and have a transponder, you can run through the airway WITHOUT talking to anyone. Happy to be corrected.

GBS - correct, but it wouldn't hurt to make a call anyway!

Airwave45 - offer accepted! I'll be in touch... It'll also help if you make the rt call to scottish too, PM me if you like and I'll explain why...
