It's a mess, but I've been very impressed with the the way they've managed to pick up the slack and keep things going. I've been able to fly where I need to with only a modicum of delay/rerouting. Flew repeatedly over that entire area yesterday and only had a few amended clearances.

wondering if they made you use what we use to call , tower enroute, clearances at lower altitudes to keep things in apch control space?

Wasn't like flying tower en route around the LA basin if that's what you mean.

It seems like approach (SBN, RFD, CMI, GUS etc) has subsumed much of the overlying airspace that generally belongs to ZAU.

Went into IKK VFR just because atc said it would be less of a pain in the neck for them. (happy to help)

Flew from Mi to Mo 100 in control of AZO, SBN, GUS, CMI, and SPI. Came back to CMI at 170 in control of SPI/CMI
CMI-IKK VFR, Subsequent VFR to ?120? IRK then to HYR at 190 (ZMU normal)
HYR (ZMU)-GRR-AZO in flight levels, normal profile, just without ZAU...
