Just starting the theory reading with Bristol GS.

I know its recommended, but do I need a CRP-5 when I have a -1 from my PPL training. Transair have it at £71.50 so does anyone want to buy a second hand ARC-1 (CRP-1)?

Also, what are the exam entry fees for the ATPL writtens?

I would (as a General Nav instructor) recommend you acquire a CRP-5 simply because this is the instrument on which the answers to the exam should have been calculated. I am unfamiliar with the CRP-1, but it may have limitations, and some instruments have scales slightly different from those on a CRP-5. I found a considerable difference in the temperature rise scale of a different flight computer, when compared to the trusty '5'.

Try the CAAs website for exam fees. You can find them at www.srg.caa.co.uk (http://www.srg.caa.co.uk) and then follow the links through Personnel Licensing to Flight Crew Licensing.

I have just done module 1 with bristol GS and would recommend getting the CRP-5. You can use any nav computer you want but they instruct using this one, so unless you are very happy with nav computers I would get the crp-5, as its one less thing to think about.

CAA exam fees are about £718 then £37 per resit :eek:

After completing the old UK ATPL's in June, I would say the CRP5 is a 'must'.

Assuming the JAR exams put you under similar time pressures,particularly Nav, you will find that accuracy is easily lost on the smaller,more crapmed scale of the '1.Plus,if you do some brush up work with Baz at Bristol,(recommended),he will show you some of the cracking short cuts on it, and you should finish up with the correct answer every time!

The most important reason for having the CRP-5 is that the CRP-1 doesn't have a compressibility scale on it, and you need it - or you did for the old CAA exams anyway, and I doubt that's changed. Also, your answers will come out DIFFERENT on the CRP-1, and different enough to give you the wrong answer in the exam! I have a CRP-5 for sale - £50 if you want it; e-mail me, though I'm going to be away for a week and won't be able to pick up e-mails till next weekend.

Initially, you have to pay for all the exams up-front. A total of £718.00!!! Then, it merely a £37.00 charge for every resit you may or may not need.
