At what point do you fly the published standard missed approach procedure rather than doing your own thing?

Is it the FAF?

You never do your own thing. Fly the published missed unless the controller tells you differently. If it's early in the approach they are likely to cancel your approach clearance and give you a new clearance. If you go missed prior to the MAP with no other instructions fly the lateral part of the approach procedure and the vertical part of the missed approach until reaching the MAP then fly the lateral and vertical of the missed procedure at the MAP.
