Funny enough, if leaving Dubai for now is not an option and for those who are out of the accommodation it might be a descent solution for a better life style. But 18.000$ is a bit low i recon...:ugh::ugh:

But the fewer kids you have living with you the more attractive the Chinese deal becomes.

EK package without kids is about 16K, so it's a bit more. But not enough (yet) to jump ships. Offer 2K more and I'm sure people will come

The thing is Emirates aren't likely to change their plans, close Dubai base and move you to Guanzhou. Also what if in a year or two you don't pass the astronaut standard medical the Chinese require. You won't get 6 months pay or maybe a ground instructor job. I think it needs to be more like 25-30 to cover the risks!

Why would the UAE government give you a work visa to live in DXB and fly for a foreign carrier. I thought our visa is so we can work for EK, fly Dubai Etc.

The current package is much more than $18k - add all the allowances up. Granted working like we do is a reason call it a day!

It's time they sharpen their pencil if they want interest from the ME, or better yet, start offering month on, month off for $16k!! I do like the "future basings" concept - that's not going to happen!!

Recruitment companies have been dictating this for far too long, I mean who wants to work 6 weeks on 2 weeks off (one of the contracts), the time has come for them to start offering some decent packages - let's start with this one, it's time to add some sweetener!!

The point of leaving EK would be to leave this cesspit, sorry sandpit, so why on earth would one want to be based here with another carrier, even if it were possible.

I agree, no way the UAE immigration will allow you to stay full time on a travel visa unless your wife/spouse is employed and can sponsor you. The way to proceed with this as I see it is to take the Guanzhou base. It is more appealing if you don't have any kids for education or you can relocate them back to your home country with parents/inlaws etc. The pay will go a long, long way in Guanzhou compared to Dubai. In Guanzhou you will NOT need a car either as public transportation and taxis are fully adequate. A big benefit on this contract is the 15 days off every 6 weeks so 6 times per year you would have a 15 day vacation with free travel tickets albeit in economy section. You can rent a decent 3 bedroom apartment for around 9,000 rmb or $1500 US. The way to deal with the dreaded Chinese medical is to secure a LOL Insurance plan which will cost you another $500 or so per month for a plan covering $7500 US per month for 5 years. The Chinese are in higher demand currently of narrow body drivers with many contracts 20K plus per month some now at 23K per month.
