Is the CVR in the same box as the crash recorder or does it have a separate box?

Not sure what you mean by "crash recorder"? There are two "black" boxes - one for the Cockpit Voice Recorder and one for the Flight Data Recorder.

iGH - great stuff and very useful. It always puzzled me why the VCR was not at the back of the aircraft to make it more crash proof. The combi recorder fixes that issue.

Thanks for your input.

Next question:

Is the 'ping' from the recorder anything to do with warships sonar or is it a completely different issue?

Very different issue. The pinger is attached and has guaranteed battery power for a minimum of 30 days. Are you a journalist?

If you are a journo, all you need to know is that the RNLI have RIB's stationed worldwide for UK registered aircraft incidents over water. They stay on station for two weeks each shift, except for those in the horse latitudes - those crews stay on station longer. They navigate by hyperbolic navigation.

Union agreements with the RNLI crews dictate that they can't stay on station for more than 6 weeks at a time as they have FTL's. (Floating Time Limitations)

In the US, I believe the USCG do this work due to work visa requirements. (USCG - some kind of pseudo military organisation with governmental approval, like Blackwater)
