Hello all!

A hypothetical question out of curiosity:

Can one become a sim instructor on a type one has not actually flown, given the required training?

Say you have extensive line and training experience flying the B737 but have never flown an Airbus. Can you do sim training and then become a sim trainer on the bus? Or is the full blown TR required?

In short no.

Part of the requirements for the TRI is to hold the type rating and for the SFI you need to have undergone the type rating course and pass the prof chef every 3 years.

You would essentially need to get the type rating to teach for it. It's also covered in the general requirements for instructors. You need to hold the rating for which you are giving instruction.
