I thought this 43 year old view of Gibraltar I took in June 1970, might be of interest to those in the RAF and Navy who lived in the blocks of "Flats" overlooking the harbour.
The RAF were in the 7 block square at the right of the complex, Navy in the other blocks.

I was RAF and fortunate to have a flat on the third floor of the far block overlooking the harbour. To those who know, this was oppposite the RAF Air Sea Rescue launch base.

I have a feeling that the Spanish patrol ship we called "Smokey Joe" , reputed to be a wood burner, hence its nickname, is the ship some way off to the left of the runway end.

Also at the far end of the harbour jetty is either the SS Uganda or SS Navasa used for school education cruises

Has anyone a recent view they could post, to best show just how much this view has changed?

PS.
Mods , please move this if you think its not in the correct forum.

I remember seeing a photo taken in Gib around 1970 showing a Gib air aircraft which had been "modified" by some wag with the letters YO painted in front of GIBAIR.

Anyone remember this or better still have the photo?

I don't know Gib (having only been there once at a very tender age) but there's a couple of pics on Malcolm McCrow's page (http://www.mccrow.org.uk/EastAfrica/JanetDavis/EastAfMemories_JanetDavis.htm) (down the bottom) of what must be the same area, taken a few years earlier.

I have a great Black and White photo of Gib take from a Canberra. If I knew how to get it on pprune I would share it with you all.

That's a great picture. Compare it with this recent view on google maps:

BN Thanks for that link.Got the photo onto Photobucket but that is as far as I could go with it as the rest made no sense to me:{

After moving to LGW with Britannia we had the Gib Airways contract for years so it was a regular run and being a scheduled flight I always took some papers up to the tower and the photo I mention was given to me with the compliments of Flt Sgt Gerry Brown. Circa 1984 perhaps. Anybody know of him?

We used to sit at the beach bar in what was then the RAF Officers' Mess, north of the runway, watching you lot land. I remember talking to one of the pilots about auto braking but it still looked a bit tense from the outside.

TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting (http://www.tinypic.com) is a bit simpler to use. Upload the pic then copy the IMG code and stick it directly in here (without using the image tag).

BN Not really compared to say Mikonos which was in my day just 4100 ft long and 30m wide and no fuel available so we had to land with enough to get to Athens to refuel.

You have confused me even more now with your suggestion re photo:sad:
