Incident: American B763 near Bogota on Nov 2nd 2013, overwing slide deployed in flight

An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N373AA performing flight AA-916 from Bogota (Colombia) to Miami,FL (USA), was climbing through FL250 out of Bogota when a loud bang occurred from the underside and right hand side of the aircraft, the crew received indication that the right hand overwing slide had deployed in flight with the right hand emergency exits firmly closed. The slide subsequently separated from the aircraft.

A passenger reported there had been a loud bang from the underside/right hand of the aircraft. Flight attendants subsequently inspected the right hand wing and commented that the slide had deployed.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 registration N673AN, that had just arrived as AA-915 and was scheduled to perform AA-1130 the following day, resumed the flight and reached Miami with a delay of 7 hours.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 registration N172AJ positioned from Miami to Bogota as AA-9609 and performed that flight AA-1130 on schedule the following day.

The incident aircraft was ferried to Tulsa,OK (USA) for repairs of damage to the wing and right hand fuselage as flight AA-9668 the following day.

This has happened previously on both the 767 and 757s (a/c with overwing exits).

Happened to one of our 777's about 5 to 10 years ago as well.

Nitpicker330:

Can you explain how a B777 lost a slide in flight without the door being opened, this being impossible if the aircraft is pressurised?

On the -300's the overwing doors have no slides incorporated within. The slides are mounted in the wing to body fairing.

We lost one from a 767 about 10 years ago... I believe it's still floating around the Vancouver harbour! :)
