Non Compulsory Waypoints

I am seeking advice about non compulsory reporting points in connection with computer flight plans. Does it happen sometimes that you ask an aircraft to report at a non-compulsory point? Would it cause a problem if this was not shown on the flight plan and had been supressed to cut down on on number of pages of the nav log? Any comments from ATC or pilots much appreciated.
