Special VFR has been used in the UK for transiting Heathrow CTR (Class A)
and other CTRs at night when IFR could not be complied with.

Has it been used for other purposes in UK?

Is it requested much in Europe?

Now that flight at night in the UK is not mandatory IFR and with the
proposal/rumour that Heathrow CTR will become Class D is there
likely to be much need for SVFR?

If I understand correctly SVFR will shortly no longer be available in Class A airspace. A common European sky policy will come into effect in 2014 that will ban that facility.
You may well find that London TMA etc change to Class D so that SVFR
is still available but I understand that the same European directive will mean that SVFR traffic will need to be separated by 3000ft and 5nm from IFR traffic.

Wrecker: the LTMA will not become class D but will remain class A. SVFR is only available in control zones (CTR) not in control areas (CTA)
