Heard somewhere that the SFO tailored arrivals are currently on hold because Korean Air pilots botched an arrival by descending without clearance! I thought only qualified airlines are allowed to use such procedures; is KAL authorised to conduct such arrivals.

Are you talking about SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT? Then the SFO tailored arrivals are not on hold as per my information.

It is sometimes confusing for non - native English speaking aircrew flying into different US airports with different procedures. For instance Dulles international, Washington DC ( KIAD ). The RNAV arrivals dictate step descents with speeds and altitude constraints. On other arrivals, one flies only the lateral profile but the vertical profile is subject to ATC approval.
