Could someone please clarify exactly what the current requirements are for the completion of an IMCR/IR(R).

As it is not specified in EU Reg 1178/2011 or its AMC, does it need to be completed at an ATO, approved for IR(A) training?

What theory examinations are required to be completed; surely not the same IR exams as per the full IR(A)?

By what date must it be completed?

Thanks in anticipation (of another headache!).

Check CAP 804, you can find it on the UK CAA website.

The index leads you to Section 5 Part G Clause 3. Which states you must comply with Section 5 Part E. Long winded way of getting there! But it details the requirements.

Good luck.

As it is not specified in EU Reg 1178/2011 or its AMC
The IMC is a UK National Rating so would not be specified in an EU publication.
It can only be attached to a UK issued Licence.

does it need to be completed at an ATO, approved for IR(A) training?
No. I don't even think it needs to be completed within an ATO.
It just needs to be taught by an Instructor qualified to teach it.

What theory examinations are required to be completed
One written IMC Test paper.

By what date must it be completed?
Although under negotiation with EASA curently IMC/IR(R) must be
applied for (issued?) no later than April 2014.

That means:
- 20 Hours Theorectical Instruction (Can be, and usually is, self study)
- Pass Written Paper
- Complete Flying Training course - Minimum 15 hours which must include
at least 10 hours Instrument Flight time.
- Pass Flight Test
- Submit Application

There is no requirement in law for an IMC to be conducted at any organisation unless so determined by the Instructors licence privileges e.g. a UK PPL3) (a) The holder may fly such an aeroplane for the purpose of aerial work which
consists of instruction or testing in a club environment provided that, in the case
of instruction, the licence includes a flying instructor's rating, class rating
instructor rating, flight instructor rating or an assistant flying instructor's rating.
