Photographing lightning at night

To any photographers out there, can anyone recommend me some settings for taking pictures of lightning during night i.e. f-stop, aperture and ISO etc? My compact is not up to the job.

I using a digital SLR and would like to take some nice pictures next time we are in the ITCZ.

I would start with a relatively small aperture and a long shutter opening -- maybe f/8 or f/11, and 1 second. See how it comes out, and adjust from there. A lot depends on other light in the sky (background reflections on the clouds, etc) and the frequency & intensity of the lightning.

Have a look on Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing (http://www.flickr.com), and search around for matching pics. I know there are a few quality night shots from the flightdeck with lightning floating around. On flickr you can also see all exif info and take it from there. It will give you some good pointers to start with.
