Does anyone know when the new control tower is due to become operational?

May I believe but stand to be corrected

As erections go how big is this one?

At 61 metres it will be the second tallest in the UK.

And some comparisons from around the world:

As we are now 30 days away from the start of May, do we have any more specific information?

YES.
Allegedly, 'Hunk Tempest' is doing his board as I type these words. :ok:

Mr Zooker, to the man in the street what does that mean exactly? I ask as a long time admirer of your work.:ugh:

obwan,
Many thanks for your kind words. It was a bit of an obscure post.
An ex-colleague and great friend of mine has recently been posted to EGCC. Just by chance, he was apparently sitting his unit validity exam as I read this discussion. Hopefully all went well.

Believe the new Brum tower goes live 13th April, as erections go, it's not massive but quite pretty

Wasn`t the BHX tower construction started quite a while before the MAN one?
Does this mean that the MAN construction was a lot smoother than BHX or not
as complex.

Slightly off topic but is the new Raytheon radar operational yet ? I saw it turning on Easter Monday but noticed the Watchman was turning as well. I thought NATS may be waiting until the move to the new tower before they plug the Raytheon in.

They have been calibrating it I think over Easter. I`m sure I read somewhere
that the cut over period is very short so every thing has to be working and upto the job.

New VCR likely to go operational near the end of May.
Watchman replacement mid June, projects are not directly related.

The BHX tower construction was completed about 12 months ago, it took until now for the fitting out.

Interesting to note that there are now three basic models of next generation radar to supplant the legacy Watchman and S511 types, namely the Selex, Raytheon and Thales. If I recall correctly, Birmingham (and Bristol) airport has chosen the Selex whereas other NATS airport ATC units seem to be favouring the Raytheon. Corect me if I'm wrong.:\

According to MAGWorld the tower goes operational on Thursday 27th June at 0200 local - that is subject to no LVPs being in place at the time.

Good luck for the move.

I'm at Manchester as I type this. It is quite sad to see the old VCR is empty. The ASMI aerial has finally stopped and the blinds have been drawn. It's as if she has closed her eyes because she doesn't need to see outside anymore :{. Sorry to be such a maudlin old tart.
